Indiana Intercollegiates

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, October 15. BOILERMAKERS won 21 of the 24 events as Purdue swimming and diving cruised to a pair of team wins at its season-opening, four-university Indiana Intercollegiates Saturday afternoon at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The Purdue men scored 893 points to win by 538 over second-place University of Indianapolis. The Purdue women totaled 785 points to win by 463 over second-place IUPUI.

Brian Kiel (200 IM and 100 back) and Alec Back (1- and 3-meter diving) both won a pair of events to lead the way for the men. Albert Miller (100 breast) and G. Daniel Michael (100 fly) won an event and swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team. Brendan Joyce (50 free and 100 fly) won a pair of heats.

There were eight different individual winners for the women. Lauren Nichols (50 free) and newcomers Amy Katz (100 back) and Carly Mercer (200 IM) both won an event and swam on a victorious relay. Emily Fogle contributed to the wins by both the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Emily McIlrath won the 100 breast and her heat in the 200 free.

Colleen Drew, who won the 200 free, was selected as the women's Boilermaker Award recipient. Friday at the Black and Gold intrasquad, Courtney Tumbush was honored in similar fashion by alumnus Lisa Butler in attendance.

Along with Back, who is a redshirt-freshman, Manuel Gutierrez made the largest impact among the men's newcomers. Gutierrez won the 200 free and finished second in the 100 free, which was one of the three events not won by Boilers. Rhiannon Sheets (100 fly) was also a winner for the women in her collegiate debut.

In an exciting finish, Katie Guell took second to IUPUI's Margaret Barber in the 500 free. The freshman won the event with a new school-record time. They finished less than one second apart. IUPUI's Chen Ni won the 3-meter diving. Maddie Miskulin (274.35), MacKenzie Tweardy (268.75) and Ni (264.95) had all finished within 10 points of each other in a tightly-contested 1-meter competition.

Other individual winners included Jenna York (100 free), Danny Tucker (50 free) and Andrew Starr (500 free).

Both Purdue teams will take on Miami (Ohio) in dual meet action for their next competitions. The women and both groups of divers will travel to Oxford for Friday's dual. The men's swimmers will host the RedHawks on Oct. 28.
