Cincinnati vs. Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio, October 22. THE University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team opened up its season Friday afternoon with the annual Crosstown Splashdown against Xavier at the Keating Aquatics Center. The women's squad knocked off the Musketeers 182-87 while the men's squad fell to Xavier 137.5-127.5.

UC opened the meet by sweeping the top three places in the women's 4×50-yard medley relay. The team of Erin Frye, Sammie Wheeler, Laurie Caudy, and Bailey Laban took the top spot with a time of 1:48.25. Liz Hansson, Victoria Jacumski, Brittany Grone, and Weronika Wasiakowksa was second in 1:49.64 and the quartet of Anna Bersani, Josefin Wede, Kinsey Kowalski, and Alicia Berman placed third in 1:51.42.

Melody Smith and Bree Rossi went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle, clocking 1:58.13, and 1:58.94, respectively. Hansson won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.76 and Frye grabbed second with her time of 1:01.06. Hansson also took top honors in the 200 backstroke with her effort of 2:04.63. Frye was third in that race, clocking 2:08.14.

Hansson won her third race with her effort of 2:09.13 in the 200 IM.

Jacumski, Stephanie Conklin, and Wheeler finished 1-2-3 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:07.20, 1:07.70, and 1:07.80 in the 100 respectively. The order was changed in the 200 with Conklin (2:24.56) taking the top spot, Jacumski (2:25.43) taking second, and Wheeler (2:30.77) in third.

Caudy (2:08.61) and Grone (2:11.49) took the top two spots in the 200 butterfly while Katie Nemann placed third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.18.

Laban swam a time of 24.31 while Wasiakowska clocked in at 24.70 in the 50 freestyle, earning the top-2 spots in the race. The duo again finished first and second in the 100 freestyle. Laban clocked 53.30 while Wasiakowska time in at 53.34.

Brittany Teneyck (323.70), Lindsay Bakan (278.40), Kirtley Krombholz (278.18), Erika Walsh (256.28), and Maggie Eubanks (244.95) all scored in the 1-meter diving event. Liz Boeckman (174.08) grabbed the top spot in the 3-meter diving.

The team of Wasiakowska, Laban, Rossi, and Caudy clcoked 1:38.44 in the 200-freestyle relay to close out the meet.

On the men's side, UC took two of the top three spots in the 200 medley relay. The team of Joe Scherpenberg, Britton Van Dissel, Roberto Nevarez, and Matt Hays was second (1:37.02) while the quartet of Brandon Metzler, Haywood Miller, Robby Walsh, and Seth Poitinger was third (1:38.47).

Nathan Williams, Stephen Cunningham, and Nate Kramer led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 freestyle. Williams clocked 1:42.83, Cunningham 1:44.44, and Kramer timed in at 1:45.26. Kramer and Cunningham went first and second in the 500 freestyle. Kramer was the winner in 4:42.95 while Cunningham was second at 4:45.21.

Metzler and Kurt Ramer went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke with times of 54.74 and 55.12, respectively. Ramer added a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke with his effort of 1:59.22.

Miller took the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 58.90 and also won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.29. Van Dissel took third place in the event with a time of 2:14.26. Miller closed out his night by adding a second-place finish in the 200 IM, clocking 1:56.28.

Nevarez and Hays took the second and third spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Nevarez clocked 21.84 while Hays timed in at 22.04.

Drew Ross swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events. He tallied and 226.50 points in the 1-meter and 225.45 points off the three-meter board.

Williams grabbed a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle with his time of 47.51. Williams also took second in the 100 butterfly at 51.72. Nevarez was on his heels in third with a clocking of 53.29.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Nevarez, Williams, Walsh, and Hays placed second in its race with a time of 1:27.07, a second off the pace of XU's winning time of 1:26.00.

UC returns to the water on Nov. 5 and 6, taking on Pittsburgh and West Virginia, respectively, in BIG EAST Conference action.
