Purdue vs. Miami

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, October 22. ARIEL Martin and Lauren Roth were each victorious in a pair of events and Erin Mertz won both diving events to help lead Purdue women's swimming and diving to a season-opening dual meet win against Miami (Ohio), 190-105, Friday evening at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Martin won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.38 and the 50 free in 23.41. Roth captured the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.62 and the 500 free in 4:58.02. Mertz scored 356.03 points in the 3-meter dive and 305.93 in the 1-meter dive to emerge victorious in both events.

The Purdue athletes and head coach John Klinge recognized junior Sarah Dunleavy after the meet, honoring her with the Boilermaker trophy. Dunleavy finished less than a second behind Martin in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.72 and was also the runner-up to Emily Fogle in the 200 individual medley. Fogle won the event with a strong showing in the freestyle, finishing in 2:07.72. Dunleavy was close behind at 2:07.87.

"It's always fun swimming against Miami," Klinge said. "I have a lot of respect for their coaches and I think we have a friendly rivalry. I was really happy with the way we raced tonight. I didn't think we were especially sharp or fast, but I thought we raced hard. We had lots of great swims, but Sarah Dunleavy really stood out. She's a junior this year and it was her best meet as a Boilermaker. Sarah was honored with the Boilermaker award tonight from the team. She'll get to choose the next recipient tomorrow. I think that's a big honor when everybody on the team identifies someone, it means you really had an exceptional meet."

Other individual winners for the Boilermakers included Jessica Skiba in the 1,000 freestyle (10:20.72), Allie Smith in the 100 backstroke (55.12), Lisa Butler in the 100 free (51.21), Colleen Drew in the 200 back (2:02.01) and Emily McIlrath in the 100 butterfly (57.45).

Purdue had at least the top three finishers in the 100 and 200 back and 50 and 100 free.

Miami's top showings came in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Kelsey Vehr topped Vogel by one-tenth of a second in the 100 and finished second to teammate Megan Brunn in the 200.

Men's divers from both teams also competed Friday evening. The Purdue men travel to Miami to complete the dual meet next Friday. David Boudia was a winner on the 1- and 3-meter boards, posting scores of 409.28 and 494.93, respectively. J.P. Perez finished second in the 3-meter (384.30).

Both Purdue swimming and diving teams will be in action Saturday for the Indiana Intercollegiates at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Men's and women's teams from the University of Indianapolis, IUPUI and Valparaiso are also scheduled to compete. The meet is set to begin at noon.
