Campbell, Virginia Military Institute vs. North Carolina State

RALEIGH, North Carolina, October 16. NC State men's and women's swimming and diving picked up season opening wins over VMI and Campbell Saturday at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The women improved to 1-0 with a 168-79 victory against Campbell, while the men secured a 165-81 victory over VMI to start their season 1-0.

NC State swimming and diving won 23 combined events Saturday, a strong showing to start the season.

The Wolfpack had four dual winners on the day. Jennifer Kopenitz, Lauren Poore, and Marifrances Henley won multiple events on the women's side. Ivan Kopas won two events for the men.

Kopenitz scored victories in the 200 freestyle (1:56.13) and the 100 butterfly (58.14). Poore won the 50 freestyle (24.69) and the 200 backstroke (2:06.51). Henley placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.75) and the 100 freestyle (52.83).

Kopas captured first place honors in the 100 backstroke (50.24) and 200 backstroke (1:49.55).

Both the men's and women's teams swept first and second place in the 200 relay medley. The women's times of 1:47.84 and 1:50.66, and the men's 1:33.77 and 1:36.20 proved strong enough to earn the wins.

Including the relay win and Kopas's pair of victories, the men won a combined 12 events: Andrew Tollefson in the 1,000 freestyle (9:55.48), Brandon Kingston in the 200 freestyle (1:42.12), Dan Forsythe in the 100 breaststroke (58.76), Barrett Miesfeld in the 200 butterfly (1:55.43), Joe Martin in the 50 freestyle (20.97), Gaites Brown in the 100 freestyle (46.58), Maxim Litvinov in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.88), and Kohl Hurdle in the 400 individual medley (4:05.81). Hudson Rains won the only diving event of the day with a final score of 358.35.

Wins by Katilin Mills in the 100 backstroke (58.95), Jordan Paavola in the 200 butterfly (2:06.93), Jessica Ward in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.44), and Kelsey Liu in the 500 freestyle (5:09.43) rounded out the women's 11 victories Saturday.

NC State will return to action Friday, October 22 as they host Maryland swimming and diving. Events will take place on campus and in Cary, N.C. beginning at 2 p.m.
