Bucknell vs. UMBC

BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 8. THE UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving team opened its 2010-11 season with a non-scored meet against Bucknell, winning 30 out of the 44 events at the UMBC Natatorium Friday evening.

Sophomore Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) swept the three women's individual medleys, including the 400 in a time of 4:27.40, the third-fastest time in UMBC history. Senior Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) won the three women's butterfly events, while fellow senior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) took the men's 50, 100 and 200 freestyles.

Other multiple winners included freshman Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science), who won the men's 100 and 200 back, freshman Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista), who won the women's 50 and 100 breaststroke, sophomore transfer Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State), who claimed the men's 100 and 200 fly, and sophomore Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson), who won the men's 50 and 100 breaststroke. Rohtla's 200 back time of 1:51.55 is the eighth-fastest time in UMBC history.

On the diving boards, sophomore Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass/Chelmsford) swept the men's 1- meter and 3-meter with scores of 238.95 and 270.37, respectively, while senior Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) won the 3-meter with a score of 234.67.

The Retrievers swept the four relays, with the women's 200 medley relay of junior Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), seniors Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) and Ryan and junior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) winning a time of 1:48.11, just a second over the pool record.

The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Oct. 16 to face Rider at 2 p.m.
