Four World Records Fall at Aussie Masters Nationals

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. May 14. FOUR World and 44 Australian National records were broken at the 26th AUSSI Masters National Championships held at the Melbourne International Aquatic Centre, April 4-8.

Margaret Cunningham set the world marks in the women’s 75-79 age group in two events, recording 1:29.19 in the 100 free and 4:04.43 in the 200m IM. The Queenslander also broke National records in the 50 breast (54.08) and 200 free (3:25.74). Pam Hutchings matched her older competitor with world records in two of the dorsal events for the 65-69 age group. Hutchings clocked 1:28.60 in the 100 back to take 3.38 seconds off the previous world record and 3:15.69 in the 200 back to lower the global mark by 0.33 of a second. She completed a fine meet by slashing national records in the 50 back (39.86), 50 free (34.90) and 100 free (1:18.35).

Victorian Diane Bockisch (55-59) lowered National marks for the 50m (37.80) and 100m (1:28.61) butterfly.

Other National records to fall in the women’s events were Donna Dalzell (50-54), in the 100 back, clocking 1:23.97, Sue Harbottle (50-54) covered the 100 breast in 1:29.41, with Tricia Legge (65-69) 1:45.28 in the same event. Barb Vickers (75-79) also lowered the record for the 200 breast, by just over seven seconds, to record 4:35.14 and in doing so broke the record for the 100 (2:13.61).

Clarice Artis (85-89) rewrote three National backstroke records. She set new marks for the 50, 100 and 200 of 1:31.50, 3:10.45 and 6:48.48 respectively. Not content with this performance she also lowered the National records for the 400 free (13:31.05) and 800 free (28:32.71).

Bob Barry matched the veteran setting new National records for the same backstroke events in the men's 70-74 division. His times were 39.86, 1:26.89 and 3:04.99 respectively. Barry also lowered records for the 100 and 200 free (1:12.59 and 2:41.18).

Michael Maloney (60-64) lowered the National record for the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:23.34 and 2:59.23 respectively. Three other men also lowered the breaststroke record over the 100m for their age group. Mark Taylor (45-49), Dieter Loeliger (65-69) and Jonathan Davis (70-74) set times of 1:18.14, 1:33.86 and 1:41.23 respectively.

Other National records included John Stackpool (45-49), who clocked 26:12 for the 50 free, Max Van Gelder (70-74) swam 31.70 also for the 50 free, Stuart Sumerville (80-84) 52.26 in the 50 fly and Peter Schuster (45-49) clocked 2:23.12 for the 200 fly.
