Rowan vs. Army

WEST POINT, New York, October 2. THE Army men's and women's swimming team made a splash in their season debut against Rowan Saturday morning at West Point's IM Pool with the women posting a 106-91 decision followed by the men's 104-90 victory.

The men (1-0) captured the first seven of 11 events contested, sweeping the top three spots in four of those victories along with a one-two finish in two others. Sophomore Ayman Andrews, who had a hand in two wins, led a sweep in the 100-yard butterfly posting the fastest time of 51.84 seconds in out touching classmate Alex Ford (52.84) for first place. Andrews earlier swam the second leg on Army's winning 200-yard medley relay that included Chuck Zhou, Matt Leegan and Dan Foky, as that foursome combined for a winning time of 1:39.14 in besting the "B" squad that touched in 1:39.61.

Rounding out the rest of the men's winners were freshmen Brock Redondo, 1000-yard freestyle (9:52.75) Michael Drives, 200-yard free (1:44.10); Kenny Yacynych, 50-yard free (21.99); and Robby Fee, 100 IM (52.24); along with sophomore Bill McCarty, 100 free (47.72).

McCarthy also took second in the longer 200 free (1:47.21) and Drives added a third in the 100 IM (54.48). The Black Knights swept the 1000 free, 200 free, 100 IM and 100 fly.

The Army women were just as dominating capturing seven of the first eight events they competed in with double winners freshman Grace Hamilton and sophomore Alyssa Tran setting the pace. In her first collegiate meet, Hamilton led a one-two Army finish with her winning time of 25.12 in the 50 free, and beat the field in the 100 free (54.31) as the Black Knights swept the top three places.

Tran registered her first win of the night in the 100 IM after touching the wall in 1:01.86, and shortly after was back in the water to compete in the 100 butterfly, which she won in 1:00.04. Also joining the winners' circle were senior Corri Payne, 200 free (1:58.37) and freshman Lara Stouffer, 100 backstroke (1:02.44).

The Black Knights opened the meet by capturing the 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.27 with Anna Lan and Michelle Su the leadoff swimmers followed by Kathryn Martin and Megan Metts competing in the final two legs as the foursome posted a clocking of 1:57.27.

After Army's men and women put the win in the books, the Black Knights swam exhibition the rest of the meet. Due to a broken pipe in Crandall Pool, the diving events had to be cancelled with the move to the IM Pool.

The Black Knights return to the pool next Friday when they host Boston College, Stony Brook, Vermont and Seattle at Crandall Pool beginning at 5 p.m.
