Santa Clara Disability Meet Taking Place This Weekend

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, September 27. THE Santa Clara Swim Club is partnering with U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, to host the 2010 Disability Meet in Santa Clara, October 1-3, 2010. All 16 members of the Paralympic Swimming Resident Athlete Program at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center (CSOTC) are expected to compete.

Among the competitors is local Pacific Swimming (LSC) athlete, Joe Wise (Menlo Park, Calif.). Wise trains with the Palo Alto Stanford club team and is 2008 U.S. Paralympian and a member of the 2010 U.S. Paralympics Swimming National Team. Wise recently returned from the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships with a bronze medal in the Men's 5K Open Water event.

Two CSOTC swimmers who are also coming off of very successful competitions at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands are Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Bloomington, Calif.) and Jessica Long (Baltimore, Calif.). Garcia-Tolson won a gold medal in the 200m individual medley as well as a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke. In addition, Garcia-Tolson has competed in two Paralympic Games (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008) and is the defending 2-time gold medalist in the 200m individual medley.

At the World Championships, Long took home five gold medals and two silver medals. In the two Paralympic Games (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008) in which she has competed, Long brought home a staggering seven gold medals.

The competition is free and open to the public.
