Jose Finkel Torphy Meet: Cesar Cielo Smokes 100 Free, Gabriella Silva Sets South American Record

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 25. CESAR Cielo nearly cleared the top time ever set in a textile suit in the men's 100 free with a sterling time to win the event at the short course meter Jose Finkel Trophy Meet held in Rio.

During finals of the men's 100 free, Cielo dropped his previous South American record even further with a swift 45.87 to win the event. That time cleared his semifinal effort of 46.13, and moved him to 11th all time in the event. He finished just out of the top 10, the final spot occupied currently by Fabien Gilot's 45.81. Heading into the techsuit era, the best time ever was a 45.83 set by Stefan Nystrand at the 2008 World Cup stop in Berlin. That time now stands tied for 21st.

Gabriella Silva, meanwhile, grabbed the South American record in the women's 50 fly with a time of 25.72 in semifinals, after first setting it with a 25.90 during prelims yesterday. Those efforts both surpassed the 25.94 set by Daynara De Paula last year during the Stockholm stop of the World Cup.

Evelyn Verraszto paced semis of the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:12.91, while Henrique Rodrigues topped the men's 200 IM semis with a 1:57.76.

In other unreported action from yesterday, Etiene Medeiros won the women's 50 back in 27.20, while Fabiola Molina (27.49) and Natalia Diniz (28.22) took second and third. Randall Bal of the U.S. just missed his top-ranked time of 23.46 in the men's 50 back with a meet-record time of 23.53. Guilherme Guido (23.61) and Leonardo Guedes (24.11) placed second and third.
