Jose Finkel Trophy Meet: Jessica Hardy, Cesar Cielo Shine With Top-Ranked 50 Frees, Markus Rogan Posts Swift 200 Free

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 22. THE second day of short course meter racing at the Jose Finkel Trophy meet in Rio de Janeiro featured three top-ranked times going up on the board in the early world rankings.

USA's Jessica Hardy won the women's 50 free with a top-ranked time of 24.11. That swim eclipsed Yolane Kukla's 24.14 set in July, which had stood as the top time in the early world rankings. Brazil's Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato finished second in 24.77, off her South American record of 24.36 from 2005. Brazil's Daiane Becker wound up third in 25.10.

Brazil's Cesar Cielo became the first man under 21 seconds this year with a top-ranked 20.80 to win the men's 50 free. He just missed Nicholas Dos Santos' South American standard of 20.74 set last year. Dos Santos, meanwhile, placed second in 21.61, while Bruno Fratus took third in 21.65.

Austria's Markus Rogan posted the top-ranked time in the early world rankings in the men's 200 free with a 1:44.45. That performance cleared the previous top mark of 1:45.12 set by Nicholas Ffrost in July. Benjamin Brusque took second in 1:45.22 to tie for third in the early rankings, while Nicolas Oliveira earned third in 1:45.40 for another top-five time in the early rankings.

Tatiana Barbosa won the women's 200 free in 1:58.37, while Manuella Lyrio touched a close second in 1:58.61. Julyana Kury earned third in 1:59.79.

Georgina Bardach won the women's 400 IM in 4:42.27, while Larissa Cieslak (4:43.73) and Kristel Kobrich (4:45.46) took second and third.

Henrique Rodrigues touched first in the men's 400 IM in 4:09.79. Thiago Simon finished second in 4:13.52, while Diogo Yabe placed third in 4:13.63.

In qualifying action, Daniele Paoli Jesus topped the women's 100 fly in 59.14, while Glauber Silva paced the men's 100 fly in 52.17. Agustina Giovanni led the way in the women's 100 breast with a 1:08.51, while Hardy coasted in qualifying with a third-seeded 1:08.61. A trio of men clocked 58-second times in the men's 100 breast: Henrique Barbosa (58.47), Felipe Lima (58.82) and Joao Luiz Jr. (58.98).
