Lincoln, Hendrickson Take Rhode Island High School Titles

PROVIDENCE, R.I. LED by 100 fly champ Daisy Maher and sprinter Liz Carlson, who scored a second in the 50 free and third in the 100, Lincoln swept to the Rhode Island girls' team swimming and diving title with a 265-195 win over East Greenwich. Cumberland was a close third (193), taking the show spot by a mere point over Bayview (192) while East Providence (167) was fifth.

On the boys' side Hendrickson was the dominant team, winning by a nearly 2 to 1 margin over runners-up Lincoln (505-268). Barrington (185), East Providence (165) and Cranston East (163) followed in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

GIRLS' EVENTS
East Greenwich won the meet's opening race, the 200 medley relay, via its 1:59.06-2:02.88 finish over Cranston East. EGR continued its hot streak in the very next race as Jaclyn Smith splashed to a 1:58.15-2:00.67 200 free win over Cumberland's Anna Greenwood, with Barrington's Christie Simpson (2:01.01) third.
Smith's time was only a second off the state record of 1:57.12 by Katherine Young of Barrington at the 1994 Championships.

Wheeler's Jamie Finkelmann stopped EGR's win streak at two races when she stroked to victory in the 200 IM (2:15.22) but Greenwich's Emmy Welch (2:16.63) pushed her all the way. Third was Classical's Erin Dwyer-Frazier (2:16.98).

Narragansett's Kim Koehler got her initial championship title in the 50 free via a convincing 25.50-26.02 win over Liz Carlson, who swam for team champ Lincoln. Taking third was East Providence's Jasmine Konkin (26.07). A few races later she also added the 100 title (55.04) with Dwyer-Frazier next (55.75).

Lincoln's Maher just missed the state fly record of 59.95 with her 1:01.82 win. Middletown's Mirian Rodrigues (1:02.78) was second.

After a disappointing fifth in the 200 free, East Providence's Michelle Kellerman stormed back to win the 500 free (5:16.98) with Cumberland's Greenwood –second in the 200 — also taking runner-up honors here (5:21.61).

Lincoln strengthened its title hopes via wins in the 200 free relay (1:45.59 to Cumberland's 1:46.24), and 400 free (state record 3:47.13 to Cumberland's 43:49.21). Narragansett's 1:47.23 was good for third in the 200 relay while in the 400 the bronze medal went to East Greenwich (3:51.87). On both of Lincoln's winning relays, fly winner Maher was anchor and sprinter Carlson swam the third leg.

Portland's Elaina Duggan was 100 back champ (1:04.14) and in the 100 breast it was Tollgate's Becky Machnik No. 1, touching in 1:09.46 — not far off the state record of 1:08.10 from seven years ago by Barrington's Audrey Cuoto.

BOYS' EVENTS
Victories in all three relays were the key to Hendrickson's boys' team title, but Louis Arruda was also instrumental in leading his school to the championship via wins in the 200 free (1:47.00) and 100 fly (53.88) and legs on the 200-400 relays.

Hendrickson's Robert Schotter was a big-time contributor of his own, scoring 40 points with twin victories in the 200 IM (2:00.73-2:03.94 over teammate Joey Beagan) and a 1:00.54-1:02.10 win in the 100 breast — with Mount St. Charles' Mike Rochette second.

East Providence's Ross Mooney (22.16) edged Pilgrim's Kyle Abrazzese (22.30) for the 50 free title but in the 100 it was the latter on top, 49.11 to Hendrickson's Chris Healy's 49.32.

Lincoln's Glenn Ginish (4:56.66) stroked to the 500 free crown; Hendrickson just missed the state record of 1:31.11 in the 200 free relay with its 1:31.46-1:34.35 win over Lincoln; East Providence's Greg LaVallee won a thriller in 100 back (56.06-56.09) with Hendrickson's Beagan runner-up; and Hendrickson's 3:20.58 was a runaway winner over Lincoln (3:28.31) in the 400 free relay.
