Beth Baker Smashes Three More Masters World Marks

ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 10. BETH O'Connor Baker resumed her onslaught on the Masters swimming world record book in a USA Swimming meet last weekend hosted by the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Coached by John Flanagan and swimming for Curl-Burke Swim Club (CUBU), she smashed three long course world marks in her first long course outing of the season.

Baker, 40, began by slashing the 100 meter backstroke mark for women 40-44 with a 1:09.88. The old mark, held by Laura Val, was 1:11.03.

The next day she blazed the 100m fly in 1:05.61, eclipsing the mark of 1:06.27, also by Laura Val. About 30 minutes later, she clocked 2:31.66 for the 200m back, hacking more than five full seconds off the record of 2:36.89, held by France's B. Bazureau.

After her record-breaking spree, Baker commented:
"Naturally I was thrilled with the records, but I'm especially happy that I am doing best times. You wouldn't believe how wonderfully supportive the USS and meet officials were in assisting me with my record attempts."
