Kassidy Cook Claims Women’s One-Meter Diving Title at AT&T National Diving Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, August 13. KASSIDY Cook (The Woodlands, Texas) picked up her first individual senior national title with a win in the women's 1-meter competition Thursday at AT&T National Diving Championships.

The 15-year-old Cook, a nine-time junior national champion, scored 299.65 points to pick up her first individual senior title. Former University of Texas diver Summer Allman (Lansing, Mich.) won the silver with 282.40 points, and Loren Figueroa (Kingwood, Texas), who won a national title with Cook in synchronized 3-meter at the 2009 championships, took the bronze at 274.20.

"I dove pretty solid. I missed a few of my hurdles, but I got my dives down," Cook said. "I'm beyond happy. I'm ecstatic. It's a big deal to me."

Cook was 12 points behind Allman after the third of five rounds but earned 9.5 scores from four of the seven judges on her fourth dive, a reverse 1 ½ pike, to take a seven-point lead into the final round. She sealed the victory with 62.40 points on her last dive, a reverse 1 ½ with 1 ½ twists.

In other action Thursday, Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.) was the top finisher in the men's 3-meter semifinals to lead the field of 12 divers who have advanced to Sunday's finals. Ipsen scored 476.95 points to edge three-time Olympian and 30-time national champion Troy Dumais (Austin, Texas), who was second with 471.80 points. Brandon Watson (Riverton, Utah), who won the men's 1-meter title on Wednesday, qualified third with 400.70 points, and 2008 Olympian Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla./Athens, Ga.) was fourth.

The AT&T National Diving Championships continue through Sunday, August 15. Friday's competition features men's and women's preliminaries and semifinals on the 10-meter platform, with the women starting at 11 a.m. and the men diving at 4 p.m.
