Canadian Long Course Nationals: Several World-Class Swims Turned In

VICTORIA, British Columbia, July 31. THE final night of pool swimming at the Canadian Long Course Nationals featured quite a few more world-class swims going up on the scoreboard. The meet comes to a close tomorrow with the open water 10K events.

Erica Morningstar topped the women's 200 IM with a top effort of 2:13.03. That clocking jumped Morningstar up to 18th in the world behind Liu Jing's 17th-ranked time of 2:12.83. Her previous best had been a 21st-ranked 2:13.57 set in July. Julia Wilkinson finished second in 2:13.80 moving to 23rd in the world. Sinead Russell earned third in 2:16.47.

Brian Johns captured the men's 200 IM with a time of 2:01.56, while Tobias Oriwol earned second in 2:02.22. Andrew Ford snagged third in 2:02.22. Meanwhile, Australia's Travis Nederpelt won the B final in 2:00.44 as an international swimmer to vault to 16th in the world.

Annamay Pierse cruised to a win in the women's 200 breast with a 2:26.02. She's been faster this year with an eighth-ranked time of 2:24.76 set back in April. Ashley McGregor took second overall in 2:28.56, while Martha McCabe placed third in 2:29.90.

Zsofi Balazs checked in with a 16:33.65 in the women's 1500 free for the win. Her time vaulted her up to 22nd in the world behind Federica Vitale's 16:33.03 from April. Savannah King took second in 16:48.44, while Natalie Sacco earned third in 16:51.31.

Warren Barnes claimed the men's 200 breast in 2:15.12, while Scott Dickens took second in 2:15.21. Richard Funk completed the podium in 2:17.50. Australia's Craig Tucker snared the B final victory with a 2:15.14, while teammate Jeremy Meyer took second in 2:15.62.

Victoria Poon won the women's 50 free in 25.69, while Hannah Riordan claimed second in 25.77. Seanna Mitchell finished third in 25.88. France's Anna Santamans picked up the B final victory in 25.36 to move into a tie for 24th in the world with Hayley Palmer.

Ryan Cochrane raced to a winning time in the men's 800 free with a 7:59.78. Cochrane has already checked in with a third-ranked time of 7:53.90 from April. Kier Maitland placed second in 8:01.61, while Sean Penhale claimed third in 8:06.67. Brent Hayden won the men's 50 free in 22.73, while Luke Peddie took second in 23.18. Kyle Troskot finished third in 23.27. Australia's Matthew Abood won the B final in 22.77.

In relay action, Katy Murdoch, Erica Morningstar, Lindsay Delmar and Mitchell won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:09.99. Australia's Grant Irvine, Craig Tucker, Lachlan Staples and Matthew Abood topped the men's 400 medley relay in 3:40.76.
