Canadian Long Course Nationals: Brent Hayden, Matthew Abood, Tianna Rissling Shine

VICTORIA, British Columbia, July 29. THE second evening of action at the Canadian Long Course Nationals produced some strong times including a few that cracked the world rankings.

Brent Hayden turned in a 49.19 to win the men's 100 free. That performance fell a bit short of his fourth-ranked season-best time of 48.56 from April. Hassaan Abdel-Khalik (50.16) and Richard Hortness (50.70) took second and third. Australia's Matthew Abood, swimming in the B final as an international swimmer, posted the fastest time of the night with a 49.18. That effort jumped him to 20th in the world rankings behind Gregory Mallet's 49.17.

Tianna Rissling claimed the women's 100 breast title in 1:08.68, moving up to 21st in the world behind Justine Mueller's 1:08.66. Jillian Tyler earned second in 1:08.94, while Chelsey Salli touched third in 1:09.11.

Brian Johns topped the men's 400 IM with a 4:17.83, but has been faster this year with a ninth-ranked season-best time of 4:15.54. Jordan Hartney finished second in 4:20.57, while Matt Kwatyra picked up third in 4:23.15.

Victoria Poon won the women's 100 free in 55.68, while Julia Wilkinson touched out Hannah Riordan, 55.84 to 55.86, for second-place honors. Sinead Russell also cleared 56 with a fourth-place 55.91. Warren Barnes captured the men's 100 breast in 1:02.07, while Scott Dickens touched a close second in 1:02.14. Richard Funk rounded out the top three with a 1:02.54.

Tanya Hunks snatched the women's 400 IM title in 4:44.67. Melanie Dodds took second in 4:45.97, while Hanna Pierse garnered third in 4:47.56. Australia's Ellen Fullerton won the B final in 4:47.51. Wilkinson earned a second podium with a first-place time of 28.92 in the women's 50 back. Russell broke through to the podium after a fourth-place in the 100 free with a second-place 29.27. Tess Simpson finished third in 29.33, while Australia's Rachel Goh won the B final in 29.18. Jake Tapp snared the men's 50 back in 26.21, while Graham Hawes (26.58) and Matthew Swanston (26.88) finished second and third. France's Dorian Gandin won the B final in 26.34.

In relay action, Australia's Fullerton, Belinda Parslow, Jade Neilsen and Merindah Dingjan won the women's 800 free relay in 8:03.00. Island's Stefan Hirniak, Blake Worsley, Jeremy Bagshaw and Ryan Cochrane claimed the men's 800 free relay in 7:23.25.
