Industry News: Springfield YMCA Looking to Fill Coaching Positions

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, July 22. SPRINGFIELD YMCA in Springfield, Ill., has openings on the swim team coaching staff, including its head coaching job.

The SPY team is a 140- member age-group team. SPY is a YMCA focused team with year-round and USA competition options. Currently, the team swims in a 4-lane pool with some early am slots but primarily with late afternoon, evening and Sunday practice times. An indoor community pool and an outdoor 50 meter pool are available on a limited basis.

The team is comprised of social swimmers to national qualifiers in keeping with the Y rules for competitive sports; Everybody swims, Everybody wins. In 2010, 59 swimmers competed at the Y Area meet which is comprised of 49 Y teams from Illinois and Missouri. In this meet the team placed 4th in the boys (10-1st place finishes) and 5th in the girls (4-1st place finishes). Additionally, there were three YMCA National Qualifiers.

We conduct a strong summer program and compete in USA Swim meets, The team has several Illinois Senior State, Illinois Age Group Championships, and Mid-State Zone qualifiers. In the fall of 2011, the Y will open an 8-lane competitive pool with meet seating, parking and advanced technology. There is a strong parent advisory group and the competitive program is an integral part of the Y aquatic program. The Y's instructional program serves over 400 youth each 8-week session.

The team currently has a vacancy in the head coach position. We will explore two options to fill this vacancy. In option one, we would fill the position with a full-time exempt staff person. Option two would be splitting the full-time position into two part-time positions, Team Manager and Head Swim Team Coach. Based on the applicant pool, we will decide which leadership option is best for the team. In addition, we are recruiting applicants for the position(s) of Assistant Swim Coach.
