Janet Evans Inducted Into National High School Hall of Fame

SAN DIEGO, California, July 13. THIS weekend, Janet Evans was inducted into the National Federation of State High School Association's National High School Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2010. She joined a class that included track and field athlete Michael Carter, cross country and track athlete Suzy Favor-Hamilton, football and track and field athlete John Godina and basketball player Katrina McClain. The event stood as the 28th Induction Ceremony for the Hall of Fame.

Up until November 2008, Evans still held the 500-yard free national high school record she set in 1988. Dagny Knutson posted a 4:34.78 at the North Dakota High School State Championships to down Evans' record of 4:37.30. Evans' record had been the longest-standing girls record in the high school books.

The National High School Hall of Fame was started in 1982 by the NFHS to honor high school athletes, coaches, contest officials, administrators, fine arts coaches/directors and others for their extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in high school sports and activity programs. This year's class increases the number in the Hall of Fame to 374.

The 12 individuals were chosen after a two-level selection process involving a screening committee composed of active high school state association administrators, coaches and officials, and a final selection committee composed of coaches, former athletes, state association officials, media representatives and educational leaders. Nominations were made through NFHS member associations.
