Comen Cup: Italy Wins Nations Title; Italy’s Diletta Carli Puts Together Fantastic Meet

CATANIA, Italy, June 21. THE two-day Comen Cup, a regional junior meet made up of Mediterranean countries, took place this weekend.

In the nations competition that occurred in long course meter format, host Italy won out with 36 medals, including 21 gold medals overall. Spain took second with 22 medals, while Turkey and Greece each had six medals, but Turkey won the tiebreaker with three golds compared to Greece's two.

Italy's Diletta Carli had no peer on the women's side of the meet. On top of helping Italy's three relays to victories, Carli also swept the freestyle events for a total of seven gold medals. Carli captured individual gold in the following events: 100 free (58.22), 200 free (2:03.40), 400 free (4:24.89), 800 free (9:02.77).

Turkey's Hazal Sarikaya, Spain's Maria Vilas and Italy's Giulia Gabbrielleschi were the only other multiple winners. Sarikaya swept the backstroke events with wins in the 100 back (1:04.03) and 200 back (2:19.37). Vilas topped the 200 breast (2:38.00) and 400 IM (4:56.06), while Gabbirelleschi posted wins in the 200 fly (2:19.89) and 200 IM (2:22.76).

Italy's Arianna Castiglioni and Turkey's Ozge Tuba Ay also earned titles. Castiglioni won the 100 breast (1:13.58), while Tuba Ay topped the 100 fly (1:05.01).

In relay action, Italy's Carli, Arianna Prati, Francesca Arredondo and Miriana Durante topped the 400 free relay in 3:55.94. Italy's Gabbrielleschi, Arredondo, Chiara Checco and Carli won the 800 free relay in 8:32.36. Italy's Checco, Michela Paganelli, Carli and Durant clinched the 400 medley relay in 4:25.75.

Four swimmers scored multiple individual titles on the boys' side. Spain's Victor Goicoechea won the 200 free (1:54.78) and 1500 free (15:31.16), while Italy's Fabio Laugeni touched first in the 100 back (57.22) and 200 back (2:04.20). Italy's Vittorio Coloretti snared the 100 breast (1:06.30) and 200 breast (2:21.61), while Greece's Andreas Vazaios pocketed titles in the 100 fly (56.01) and 200 IM (2:06.56).

Italians Giacomo Ferri (100 free (51.47)), Gabriele Detti (400 free (3:57.03)), Davide Carlier (200 fly (2:03.07)) and Giorgio Gaetani (400 IM (4:37.66)) claimed the other four titles.

Italy's Riccardo Maestri, Ferri, Martino Lucatello and Damiano Corapi won the 400 free relay in 3:30.74, while Andrea Mitchell D'Arrigo, Corapi, Ferri and Maestri took home the 800 free relay in 7:37.94. Niccolo Bonacchi, Coloretti, Carlier and Ferri claimed the 400 medley relay in 3:52.51.
