CIF Central Coast Sectional Championships

SANTA CLARA, California, May 24. A national independent high school record fell during the CIF Central Coast Sectional Championships held in Santa Clara.

Bellarmine College Prep easily won the boys team title with 384 points. Valley Christian finished second with 216 points, while Sacred Heart Prep (156.50), Harker School (137) and Saratoga (113) also finished in the top five.

Archbishop Mitty held off Palo Alto, 292.50 to 256.50, for the girls team crown. Saint Francis (242), Gunn (220) and Homestead (151) comprised the rest of the top five.

Girls Results
As previously reported, St. Francis' Maddy Schaefer lowered the national independent high school record in the 50 free. In prelims, Schaefer posted a 22.26 to down the standing national independent high school record of 22.39. Gulliver Prep's Christina Swindle held the previous record since 2002. Schaefer then dropped the mark even further with a top time of 22.24 in the finale. Kara Lynn Joyce still holds the overall and public high school record in the event with a 22.04 as the relay leadoff of Pioneer High's team in 2002. Schaefer returned with a sectional-record time of 48.61 to win the 100 free.

Palo Alto's Jasmine Tosky continued her recent rise through the ranks. She set a sectional record with a winning time of 1:44.11 in the 200 free. She also lowered the sectional mark in the 100 fly with a 52.77.

Archbishop Mitty claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:46.58, while Saint Francis topped the 200 free relay in 1:34.16 – a sectional record. Saint Francis then won the 400 free relay in 3:25.97.

Harker's Jessica Khojasteh took home the 200 IM in 2:03.11, while Woodside's Alicia Grima captured the 500 free in 4:51.09.

Pioneer's Linnea Mack posted a 55.05 to win the 100 back, while Archbishop Mitty's Eva Chen surfaced from a competitive final in the 100 breast to win in 1:03.37.

Archbishop Mitty's Stephanie Phipps won the one-meter diving crown with 483.95 points.

Boys Results
Bellarmine won the 200 medley relay in 1:35.03, while Valley Christian claimed the 200 free relay in 1:23.91. That swim now stands as the sectional record. Valley Christian then won the 400 free relay in 3:05.03.

Sacred Heart's Tom Kremer earned the 200 free title in 1:37.45. He then doubled with a 50.05 to win the 100 back. Valley Christian's Shayne Fleming also doubled with a sprint sweep by winning the 50 free (20.00) and 100 free (44.64).

Monte Vista (Christian) topped the 200 IM in 1:49.88, while Los Gatos' Erich Peske finished first in the 100 fly in 49.41. Saratoga's Adam Hinshaw cruised in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:22.27, while Palo Alto's Byron Sanborn garnered the 100 breast victory with a 57.75.

In diving, Saint Francis' Austen Blease won the one-meter with 495.75 points.
