St. Francis’ Maddy Schaefer, Carondelet Shoot Down National High School Records

CONCORD/SANTA CLARA, California, May 23. AT the Central Coast Section swim meet held in Santa Clara this weekend, St. Francis' Maddy Schaefer put on a show in the women's 50-yard freestyle. Meanwhile, in Concord, Carondelet picked off the women's 200-yard medley national high school record during the North Coast Section championship meet.

Schaefer first clocked a time of 22.26 in prelims to down the standing national independent high school record of 22.39. Gulliver Prep's Christina Swindle held the previous record since 2002. Schaefer then returned in the finale to lower the record even further with a top time of 22.24.

Kara Lynn Joyce still holds the overall and public high school record in the event with a 22.04 as the relay leadoff of Pioneer High's team in 2002.

Carondelet's Madison White, Allison Gargalikis, Christina Ray and Chelsea Chenault turned in a sterling time of 1:40.80 in the women's 200-yard medley relay. That swim beat the overall national high school record of 1:41.63 set by The Baylor School last year.

The foursome joined Natalie Coughlin as current national independent high school record holders from the school. Coughlin might have lost her overall record in the 100-yard back to Edison's Cindy Tran earlier this year, but no one representing an independent school has gone faster than her 52.86 from 1998.
