Edison’s Cindy Tran Crushes National High School Record; Breaks 52-Second Barrier

LONG BEACH, California, May 15. AT the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships last night, Edison's Cindy Tran, fresh off an enjoyable trip to Ireland as part of the NCSA All Star Team, crushed the women's 100-yard back national high school record.

Tran, who is headed to California, trumped all-time Golden Bear great Natalie Coughlin's national high school record with a scorching time of 51.85. Tran turned in an initial split of 25.04, while coming home in 26.81.

That performance wiped out the public school record of 52.89 set by Churchill's Lily Moldenhauer in February, and beat the overall and independent school standard of 52.86 set by Coughlin while representing Carondelet way back in 1998.

Tran's sub-52 time moved her into a small group of swimmers in the event to break the 52-second barrier. Only 13 other swimmers have surpassed the mark.

The record was the second-oldest among the women's high school records. The only record standing from before the turn of the millennium is Misty Hyman's amazing 100 fly time of 52.41 set while representing Shadow Mountain in 1996. The oldest overall record remains Jeff Kostoff's astounding 4:16.39 in the men's 500 free while swimming for Upland in 1983.
