Russian Long Course Nationals: Andrey Grechin, Yuliya Efimova Win Close Battles

MOSCOW, Russia, May 9. THE Russian Long Course Nationals had a few exciting finishes this evening.

Andrey Grechin jumped into eighth in the world this year with a 48.82 to win the men's 100 free. Compatriot Danila Izotov touched just behind with a 48.88 to pick up ninth in the world. Evgeny Lagunov placed third in 49.04.

"It was easy to swim tonight," Grechin told Russian Swimming. "I felt comfortable to swim in a highly competitive environment. Before the European Championships is still quite a long time, so I have time to improve."

Yuliya Efimova and Anastasia Chaun put on a show in the women's 200 breast with Efimova coming out on top, 2:26.24 to 2:26.91. Both times are among the top 15 in the world rankings this year. Alena Alekseeva claimed third in 2:27.84.

Alexander Shimin won the men's 800 free with a time of 8:03.83. Vitaly Romanovich claimed second in 8:05.83, while Yuri Prilukov finished third in 8:05.88. Irina Bespalova won the women's 100 fly in 59.04, while Svetlana Fedulova took second in 1:00.13. Veronica Popova earned third in 1:00.25.
