Eight U.S. Swimmers to Compete at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, April 30. USA Swimming today announced that a team of eight U.S. swimmers will travel to Singapore for the Youth Olympic Games, August 14-26. The swimming competition will run August 15-20.

"We are excited to see these eight swimmers will represent the U.S. in Singapore at the first-ever Youth Olympic Games," said Mark Schubert, USA Swimming's National Team Head Coach and General Manager. "The development of young swimmers is extremely important to the future success of USA Swimming and an international meet like the Youth Olympic Games will provide a great learning experience for these talented young athletes."

USA Swimming selected the eight swimmers for the Youth Olympic Games based upon a variety of factors. As mandated by the Youth Olympic Games, every female swimmer must have been born between 1993 and 1994 and every male swimmer's birth date must be in either 1992 or 1993. Each athlete on the roster must also have achieved a FINA Youth Olympic Games "A" time standard at a FINA approved competition. The four highest ranked males and females meeting the above criteria were nominated to the team.

In addition, in order to be selected to the team, a swimmer must not have been a member of the USA Swimming 2009-2010 National Youth Team and the swimmer cannot participate in the 2010 Junior Pan Pacific Championships or the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships taking place this August.

"Our decision to send a team to the Youth Olympic Games was based on an opening in the U.S. delegation as well a slight change in our youth development schedule," said National Youth Team Head Coach Jack Roach. "Furthermore, competing at the Youth Olympic Games will be an invaluable opportunity for these swimmers to gain competitive experience at the International level."

The U.S. swim team in Singapore will be led by coach Larry Liebowitz, who is also the current head swim coach at Oregon State. The full U.S. swim team roster for the Youth Olympic Games:
