Chinese Long Course Nationals, Day Four: Jiao Liuyang and Ye Shiwen Post Fast Swims

SHAOXING, China, April 25. THE long course Chinese nationals, serving as a selection meet for the Asian Games, continued to show the world of China's swimming prowess in the penultimate day of competition with top performances by a veteran and upstart newcomer.

Jiao Liuyang posted her second world-leading time of the meet with a 57.67 in the women's 100 fly, putting her four-hundredths ahead of Stephanie Rice and a few tenths faster than Francesca Halsall to give the world three 57-second swims of the year so far. In second in the 100 fly was Guo Fan with a 58.70 and in third was Ling Shunyuan in 58.97.

Ye Shiwen, a young teenager who finished third in the 400 IM earlier in the meet for the seventh-fastest time of the year, put a challenge to Rice in the 200 IM with a 2:10.32. Rice still leads the world with a 2:10.07, with the USA's Ariana Kukors just a shade behind Ye's swim. In second was Wang Qun, who touched in 2:11.26. Rounding out the podium was Liu Jing with a 2:12.83.

Men's 100 free final
Jiang Haiqi was the victor in the 100 free with a 50.16, with the top three finishing within two tenths of each other. Lu Zhiwu was second with a 50.22 and in third was Shi Tengfei with a 50.34.

Women's 50 back final
A rare tie took place in the women's sprint backstroke, with Gao Chang, the world championships bronze medalist in the event, getting her hand on the wall at the same time as Zhao Jing, the world champion. Both swam a 27.72. Zhao's world record stands with a 27.06. In third was Xutian Longzi with a 28.50.

Men's 50 breast final
Qu Jingyu was the victor with a 28.42, with second and third going to Li Xiayan's 28.51 and Xie Zhi's 28.55.

Women's 50 free final
Li Zhesi won the women's sprint with a 25.11, the seventh-fastest swim of the year. Wang Junyao was second with a 25.61. Third place went to Tang Yi, who finished in 25.62.
