Canadian Spring Nationals/Pan Pacific Trials: Brent Hayden, Brian Johns Clock Strong Times

MONTREAL, Quebec, April 1. THE second evening of long course action at the Canadian Spring Nationals, which serve as the nation's Pan Pacific Trials, produced two near world bests so far this year.

The effort finished just .40 off his winning time from World Trials last summer, and just back of Eamon Sullivan's world best of 48.52 set last month in Australia. Colin Russell (49.44), Joel Greenshields (51.04) and Richard Hortness (51.19) wound up second through fourth.

Brian Johns topped the men's 400 IM in 4:15.54, moving him into second in the world this year. Roberto Pavoni claimed the top time earlier today in Britain with a 4:14.55. Andrew Ford finished second in 4:22.35, while Jordan Hartney placed third in 4:22.42.

Victoria Poon claimed the women's 100 free title in 55.35, while Canadian record holder Erica Morningstar wound up second in 56.03. Sandrine Mainville (56.09) and Genevieve Saumur (56.19) placed third and fourth.

Annamay Pierse cruised to victory in the women's 100 breast with a 1:08.56. That swim improved her season best of 1:08.65 set in February at the Missouri Grand Prix. Ashley McGregor finished second in 1:09.78, while Haylee Johnson completed the top three in 1:09.92.

Paul Kornfeld surfaced victorious from a close competition in the men's 100 breast. Kornfeld checked in with a 1:02.48, while Scott Dickens (1:02.65) and Mathieu Bois (1:02.70) finished close behind with a second and a third.
