British Gas Swimming Championships, Day Four: Roberto Pavoni, Rebecca Adlington Post World Bests

SHEFFIELD, England, April 1. THE fourth day of long course meter swimming at the British Gas Swimming Championships produced a pair of world bests this year, while Fran Halsall also had a strong evening.

Roberto Pavoni earned the top time in the world in the men's 400 IM with a winning effort of 4:14.55, while Joseph Roebuck moved into second in the world this year with a 4:15.61. Both times beat the previous world best of 4:16.81 clocked by Thomas Fraser-Holmes last month in Australia. Thomas Haffield claimed third tonight in 4:17.47, now among the top five in the world this year.

Rebecca Adlington added another world best tonight with an 8:21.95 in the women's 800 free. That effort beat the previous top time in the world this year set by Katie Goldman with an 8:22.83 last month in Australia. Sasha Matthews finished second in 8:34.50, while Jazmin Carlin wound up third in 8:35.52.

Halsall won the women's 100 fly title with the second-fastest time in the world this year. She clocked a 57.83 for the victory, becoming just the second woman under 58 seconds this year. She trails only Stephanie Rice, who turned in a 57.71 last month in Australia. Ellen Gandy (58.64) and Jemma Lowe (58.73) finished second and third, moving into the top 10 in the world this year. Halsall later scored the top time in the women's 50 free semis with a 25.13. She will be looking to improve her season best of 24.94 set in February, which is tied for second in the world this year.

Adam Brown claimed the men's 100 free title in 49.64, while Grant Turner placed second in 49.78. Ross Davenport (49.81) and Simon Burnett (50.03) completed the top four. Burnett previously inked a 49.46 to lead the semifinal round, but could not replicate the effort.

In semifinal action, Darren Mew (28.39) and Daniel Sliwinski (28.61) led the way in the men's 50 breast. Georgia Davies posted the top time in the women's 50 back with a 28.72.

Achieng Ajulu-Bushell paced the women's 100 breast semis with a 1:08.84, moving into the top 10 in the world this year and improving upon her season-best time of 1:09.50. Liam Tancock cruised in the men's 100 back semis with a 54.84, a second off his previous season-best of 53.84 from February.

Michael Rock turned in the top time of the men's 100 fly semis with a 52.36. That performance moved him into third in the world this year behind Andrew Lauterstein (51.79) and Jason Dunford (52.33).

In multi-disability events, Louise Watkin was listed first in the women's 100 free with a 1:04.46. Sascha Kindred was listed first in the men's 50 fly with a 32.85, while Jan Langton was listed first in the women's 50 fly with a 46.32.
