Paralympic U.S. Swimmers Break Personal Best Times on Day One of Can-Ams

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, March 26. OVER 160 top adaptive athletes filled the Palo Alto College Natatorium Thursday March 25, 2010 as the Spring National Swimming Can-Am Championships kicked off in San Antonio, Texas. The U.S. athletes proved that they are among the best of the best beating personal best times and improving world rankings.

The U.S. had impressive times in the men's and women's 100m breaststroke. Both Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and teammate Cody Bureau (Colorado Springs, Colo.) improved their personal best times by almost two seconds. While 13-year-old Jessica Rodgers (Washington, D.C.) improved her best time by over 17 seconds with a new time of 2:34.11.

Mike Demarco (San Diego, Calif.), currently ranked first in the world for the 50m breaststroke, set a new world record of 1:01.04 beating his current world record by nearly a second.

In the women's 400m freestyle, Miranda Uhl (Alachua, Fla.) currently fifth in the world in her division beat her best time by over a second. Also improving their world ranking times where Susan Beth Scott (Cape Girardeau, Mo.), Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Kelly Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis).

For the men's 400m freestyle, 14-year-old, Caleb Utesch (Ames, Ia.) grabbed first place for his division with a time of 4:48.34. Utesch is currently ranked 17th in the world. Improving their current best times were, Joe Wise (Menlo Park, Calif.) taking second place with a time of 4:22.03 and Dalton Herendeen (Concord, Ind.) following in third with a time of 4:29.58.
