NCAA Division I Women’s Championships: Georgia Battles Back in 200 Free; Allison Schmitt, Morgan Scroggy Go 1-2

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 19. GEORGIA bounced back from a disappointing disqualification in the 200 medley relay with a 1-2-4 finish in the 200 free.

Allison Schmitt clocked a 1:42.84 to break the pool record of 1:43.29 she set during prelims. Her winning time this evening stands 12th all time in the event, and improved upon her previous personal best of 1:42.90 set in 2009. The effort put her into sole possession of fourth all time. The triumph also gave Georgia its third victory ever in the event. Martiza Correia (2000) and Kara Lynn Joyce (2006) are former Bulldogs to have claimed the 200 free crown.

"It's really exciting," Schmitt said. "We're still fighting for a national championship so we are just trying to go out there and do the best we can. To win is an amazing feeling."

Morgan Scroggy finished in second with a 1:42.94, which stands as the 15th best time ever and finished just off her personal best of 1:42.90. Texas A&M's Julia Wilkinson earned third with a 1:44.12, while Georgia's Megan Romano touched fourth in 1:44.31. Florida's Shara Stafford clocked a swift 1:44.00 to win the consolation heat.

Stanford kept its lead with 235.5 points, while California remained in second with 222 points. Georgia (221.5), Arizona (177.5) and Florida (171) owned the rest of the top five spots.
