NCAA Division II Championships: Drury Claims Men’s, Women’s Team Titles; Logan Pearsall Sets NCAA D2 Diving Record

CANTON, Ohio, March 13. THE NCAA Division II Championships came to a close with Drury finishing atop both the men's and women's team title races. Additionally, Clarion's Logan Pearsall beat the NCAA D2 record in the men's three-meter diving event.

The Drury men clinched their sixth straight team title, including their eighth out of the last 12 titles, by finishing the meet with 538 points. Incarnate Word placed second with 403 points, while Wayne State finished third with 343 points. Grand Valley State (314) and Ouachita Baptist (300) rounded out the top five. Wingate (290), UC San Diego (251), Missouri S&T (198), West Chester (193) and Ashland (178) made up the rest of the top 10.

Drury's women won their third title out of the last four meets after amassing 657 points. Wayne State took second with 531 points, while UC San Diego finished third with 318 points. West Chester (313.5) and Truman State (251) closed out the meet in fourth and fifth. Clarion (234), Ashland (183), Grand Valley State (180), Indianapolis (171) and Southern Connecticut State (130) comprised the top 10.

Wayne State's Ashley St. Andrew dominated the women's 1650 free with a winning time of 16:35.98, while Drury's Erin Dolan finished second in 16:58.08. Southern Connecticut's Cody Hall earned third in 16:59.40. Drury's Chris Jacobsen clocked a 15:28.34 for the men's 1650 free victory. Incarnate Word's Conrado Chede placed second in 15:32.15, while Lewis' Kevin Coates wound up third in 15:34.01

West Chester's Jackie Borkowski touched out Incarnate Word's Tamiris Nascimento, 49.77 to 49.94, in the women's 100 free for the win. Both fell short of Toni Burton's 2005 NCAA D2 record of 49.33. Truman's Kate Aherne kept piling up the points for her squad with a third-place 50.43. UCSD's Dan Perdew topped the men's 100 free in 44.10 after clocking a 44.06 during prelims. Wingate's Mason Norman matched his preliminary effort with a second-place 44.36, while Ouachita's Radu Badalac took third in 44.37.

In another close contest, Drury's Yuan Qing Li had a stronger back half after flipping at the same time as UCSD's Alexandra Hundley at the 100 in the women's 200 back. Li claimed the title in 1:58.36, while Hundley fell back to second in 1:58.79. The two finished the first half in 58.38s. IUP's Jackie Hynson earned third in 2:00.79. Florida Southern's Jeb Halfacre clinched the men's 200 back title in 1:46.71, while Drury's Alexander Protsenko took second in 1:47.64. Incarnate Word's Nikita Belousov turned in a third-place time of 1:48.63.

Wayne State's Ana Gonzalez Pena grabbed the women's 200 breast crown in 2:14.64, while Kutztown's Stephanie Jeppesen finished second in 2:15.11. Wayne State's Courtney Roberts claimed third in 2:17.28. Another exciting race occurred in the men's 200 breast with Wayne State's Joaquin Abascal Gallegos edging Ashland's Cheyne Fisher, 1:59.49 to 1:59.81. Drury's Jun Han Kim wound up third in 2:00.14.

In the diving break, Clarion's Logan Pearsall set an NCAA D2 record in the men's three-meter event with 557.50 points. That time cleared the previous mark of 556.40 set by Oakland's Dario DiFazio back in 1994. West Chester's Adam Vance finished second with 497.15 points, while Wayne State's Cayce Bolt clinched third with 489.20 points.

Drury's Kelsey Ward, Tiffany Van Dongen, Yuan Qing Li and Li Tao topped the women's 400 free relay with a time of 3:24.14, while West Chester's Borkowski, Erin Fischer, Megan Bauer and Kristen Montello took second in 3:25.59.

Wingate's Gus Chagas, Rory Julyan, Daniel Defrancisco and Mason Norman completed the meet with a winning time of 2:58.22 in the 400 free relay. UCSD's Todd Langland, Sam Stromberg, Blake Langland and Dan Perdew finished a close second in 2:58.49.
