NAIA Championships: Fresno Pacific Men Lead After Day Two, Tied With SCAD Among Women

ST. PETERS, Missouri, March 4. FRESNO Pacific jumped out to a big lead in the men's team title race at the NAIA Championships held in Missouri, while FPU's women tied SCAD heading into the third day.

Fresno's men amassed 257.5 points after two days, while Lindenwood stood second with 194 points. Cal Baptist (183), Concordia (111) and SCAD (110) also held top-five spots.

Fresno and SCAD tied for the lead among the women with 154 points each. Cal Baptist was not far behind with a third-place 150 points. Azusa Pacific (146) and Concordia (121) sat fourth and fifth.

SCAD's Alex Graudins nearly beat the NAIA record in the men's 500 free with a 4:27.44. That swim came close to Tomas Eriksson's time of 4:27.02 set for Drury in 1991. Fresno's Steven Piggott (4:33.86) and Dan Wilson (4:36.19) finished second and third. Azusa Pacific's Kaylen Hewko topped the women's 500 free in 4:58.46. Cal Baptist's Adriana Quezada took second in 4:59.70, while Fresno's Brooke Turner earned third in 5:05.05.

Cal Baptist's Kevin Sellars and Simon Fraser's David Hibberd put on a show in the men's 200 IM as both cleared Kelly Kremer's 1992 NAIA record of 1:49.67. Sellars won in 1:49.44, while Hibberd touched second in 1:49.59. Lindenwood's Javier Hernandez took third in 1:52.19. Fresno's Stacy Carter snatched the women's 200 IM title in 2:06.82, while Concordia's Ana Gomez finished second in 2:08.53. Lindenwood's Sarah Billamosa placed third in 2:09.16.

Simon Fraser's Ben Berg raced to victory in the men's 50 free with a 20.37, while Illinois Tech's Max Ramminger posted a 20.47 for second. Concordia's Eric Anderssen wound up third in 20.51. Fresno's Cheyenne Coffman earned the women's 50 free crown in 23.12, just missing Vicky Sui's 2009 NAIA record of 23.10. Simon Fraser's Addie Kolybaba took second in 23.58, while SCAD's Kaycee Corso placed third in 24.32.

In relay action, Fresno Pacific's team of Erik Thiessen, Bart Kelly, Carl Weigley and Brad Babcock lowered the NAIA record in the men's 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.86. That swim beat the 1:30.54 set by Cal Baptist last year. Fresno Pacific's foursome of Coffman, Lauren Malthaner, Carter and Turner clipped the NAIA record in the women's 200 medley relay with a 1:45.04. That performance nipped the 1:45.09 set by Simon Fraser back in 1997.

Meanwhile, CBU's Brian Haney, Sellars, Spencer Knight and Alan Ogden claimed the men's 800 free relay with an NAIA record time of 6:42.98. The effort crushed the 2005 mark of 6:46.13 set by Simon Fraser. Fresno's team of Weigley, Dan Wilson, Raymond Eggert and Piggott also cleared the old record with a second-place 6:45.01. Fresno's quartet of Coffman, Turner, Megan Smith and Carter captured the women's 800 free relay title in 7:39.59.

Illinois Tech's Ian McNair won the men's one-meter title with 259.20 points, while Lindenwood's Colin Sharpe took second with 254.35 points. Cal Baptist's Trevor Graifman wound up third with 250.40 points.
