NJCAA Championships: Indian River Extends Lead in Day Two

FORT PIERCE, Florida, March 4. THE second day of short course yard action at the NJCAA Championships featured Indian River State College put itself well on the way to extending its streaks of 35 and 28 years of winning the men's and women's title.

Indian River's men pushed their lead to more than 100 points with 351 points after day two. Lincoln held second with 247 points, while Daytona had third with 218 points. Monroe (125) and Darton (121) comprised the top five.

The IRSC women took a commanding lead with 392 points, while Daytona stood second with 210 points. Darton (147), Monroe (119) and Lincoln (84) made up the rest of the top five.

Indian River went 1-2 in the women's 500 free. Vanessa Hanbury won in 4:54.60, a second back of Gwenn Cross' 1983 NJCAA record of 4:53.48. Rebecca Harrison finished second for IRSC in 5:04.70, while Monroe's Meghan Rickelman took third in 5:16.99.

IRSC also swept the top two spots in the men's 500 free. Mateo De Angulo clocked a 4:25.42 for the win, while teammate John Ellis placed second in 4:26.35. Daytona's Will Collum completed the top three in 4:34.29.

The River kept rolling in the women's 200 IM with a top three sweep. Jessica Chandlee won in 2:07.12, while Mary Frank placed second in 2:09.30. Katie Kittrell finished third in 2:10.45.

Lincoln's Daniel Corley snatched the men's 200 IM title in 1:52.20, with Dayton finished second and third in a rare River whitewash. Deniz Hekmati (1:52.99) and Kevin Doran (1:54.93) took second and third for Daytona.

IRSC's Charlotte Graham threatened Mary O'Sullivan's NJCAA record of 23.13 from a year ago with a winning time of 23.32 in the women's 50 free. Teammate Monika Mialka placed second in 23.76, while Daytona's Megan Wolfe wound up third in 23.83.

Indian River's Donaven Van Der Merwe cleared 20 seconds with a 19.88 for the men's 50 free win. He also clocked a 19.86 during prelims to threaten Emmett Walling's 2009 record of 19.43. IRSC's Wyman (20.23) and Hein (21.50) rounded out the top three.

In relay action, IRSC's Hanbury, Charlotte Graham, Andrea Uzcategui and Mialka won the women's 200 free relay in 1:33.44. Hanbury posted a 23.66 leadoff split, falling half a second short of O'Sullivan's NJCAA record. Indian River's Van Der Merwe, Wyman, Philip Gallego and Hein claimed the men's 200 free relay title in 1:20.82.

In diving, IRSC went 1-2-3 in the women's one-meter with a podium sweep from Sarah Wygle (378.90), Britta Daniels (338.35) and Cynthia Maturo (335.05). Lincoln's Tyler Clingerman won the men's three-meter event with 494.30 points, while Monroe's Grant Oosterling took second with 378.80 points. Lincoln's Adam Keane placed third with 356.05 points.
