Austrian Long Course Championships: Final Day Features Familiar Faces

VIENNA, Austria, February 28. THE last day of the Austrian Long Course Championships featured much of the same from the first few days. Familiar faces continued to finish in the top three.

Jordis Steinegger beat Eva Chaves-Diaz by the slimmest of margins, 31.02 to 31.03, in the women's 50 back. Sabine Freinek placed third overall in 31.21. Sebastien Stoss picked up the men's 50 back title in 26.74. Christian Zluga took second in 27.02, while Oliver Simkovic wound up third in 28.32.

Lisa Zaiser topped the women's 50 breast in 33.11, while Caroline Reitshammer placed second in 33.44. Christina Strigl touched third in 33.60. Hunor Mate cleared 29 seconds to win the men's 50 breast in 28.94. He owns the national record with a 28.00 from the World Championships last year. Stefan Wipplinger took second in 29.52, while Michael Volgyes wound up third in 29.82.

Birgit Koschischek paced the women's 100 free in 56.43, while Chaves-Diaz pocketed her second podium with a distant second-place time of 58.45. Maria Batliner rounded out the top three in 59.54. Martin Spitzer beat Austrian record-holder Dominik Koll, 50.95 to 51.05, in the men's 100 free. Koll holds the record with a 50.02 from this meet a year ago. Marcel Schaufler grabbed third in 51.76.

Uschi Halbreiner raced to a 2:18.07 for the women's 200 IM triumph. Zaiser earned her second podium with a second-place 2:21.65. Steinegger also podiumed for the second time with a 2:22.07. Dinko Jukic won the men's 200 IM in 2:01.23. Bernhard Wolf took second in 2:04.10, while Dominik Dur earned third in 2:05.71.

Nina Dittrich grabbed the women's 1500 free title in 16:57.35. Anais Szekendi finished second in 17:49.85, while Viktoria Hackl went 17:55.27 for third place. David Brandl eased through the men's 800 free with an 8:04.88 for the win. Florian Janistyn took second in 8:07.30, while Christian Scherubl placed third in 8:26.53.

Steinegger competed her strong weekend leading off the women's 400 medley relay victory of Steinegger, Victoria Schimpl, Dittrich and Szekendi to a 4:29.10. Stoss, Maxim Podoprigora, Jakub Maly and Schaufler claimed the men's 400 medley relay title in 3:56.06.
