Japan Open: Hidemasa Sano Lowers Another Japanese Record

TOKYO, Japan, February 28. HIDEMASA Sano concluded a strong two-day meet at the Japan Open with his second short course meter national record in as many days in Tokyo.

Sano concluded his strong weekend by crushing his Japanese record in the men's 200 IM. Sano checked in with a 1:53.85 this evening, cutting more than a second from his previous mark of 1:54.92 set at this meet a year ago. Austria's Markus Rogan finished second in 1:54.10, while Japan's Yuuma Kosaka wound up third in 1:55.93. Japan's Tomoyo Fukuda won the women's 200 IM in 2:09.24, while Izumi Katou (2:10.01) and Yuka Kawano (2:10.54) placed second and third.

Sweden's Therese Alshammar opened the second evening with a winning time of 53.39 in the women's 100 free. China's Li Zhesi touched just behind in 53.48 for second, coming within a half-a-second of Le Jingyi's Chinese record of 53.01 set back in 1993. Denmark's Jeanette Ottesen turned in a third-place 53.61. Japan's Takurou Fujii claimed the men's 100 free title in 48.28, while South Africa's Darian Townsend placed second in 48.40. China's Lu Zhiwu took third overall in 48.58.

China's Chen Huijia won the women's 50 breast in 30.54, just missing Luo Xuejuan's national mark of 30.17 set in 2002. Japan's Mina Matsushima finished second in 30.76, while Korea's G. Kim rounded out the top three in 31.01. Japan swept the podium in the men's 50 breast with Ryo Tateishi (26.92), Naoya Tomita (26.95) and Yuuki Honda (27.05) all finishing within a half-a-second of Yuta Suenaga's national standard of 26.80 set at the Singapore stop of the 2009 World Cup series.

Japan's Junya Koga held off teammate Ryosuke Irie, 50.78 to 51.17, in the men's 100 back. Koga owns the national record with a 50.07 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup last year. Masafumi Yamaguchi took third in 51.86. Meet management has not reported the final results of the women's 100 back.

China's Jiao Liuyang won the women's 100 fly in 56.54, off Liu Zige's national record of 56.13 set in Berlin last year. Alshammar drew her second podium of the night with a second-place 57.09, while Japan's Yuka Katou placed third in 57.20. Japan's Kouhei Kawamoto snatched the men's 100 fly title in 50.94. Teammates Ryo Takayusa (51.02) and Hiroki Katou (51.57) completed the top three.

Denmark's Lotte Friis cruised in the women's 400 free with a winning time of 4:02.53. China's Tan Miao (4:03.43) and Liu Jing (4:04.09) placed second and third. Japan's Takeshi Matsuda topped the men's 400 free in 3:42.91. Denmark's Mads Glaesner earned second in 3:43.64, while Japan's Syogo Hihara claimed third in 3:44.45.

Japan's Rie Kaneto snagged the women's 200 breast crown in 2:18.63, while Fumiko Kawanabe touched a distant second in 2:21.19. Saya Fujimoto picked up third in 2:21.89. Tateishi completed a double with a time of 2:04.26 to win the men's 200 breast after capturing the sprint breast earlier in the evening. Tomita took second again to Tateishi with a 2:04.59, while Kazuki Ohtsuka concluded the Japanese podium sweep with a third-place 2:05.45.
