Big West Championships: Day Two

LONG BEACH, California, February 18. THE halfway point of the 2010 Big West Swimming & Diving Championships has been reached and the UC Santa Barbara women and UC Davis men find themselves midway to a league title. The Championships are being held at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif.

The Gaucho women held their position from the first day and have 336 points entering the second half of the Championships. UC Davis is second with 247 tallies, while Cal Poly is third with 218. Pacific (166) and Cal State Northridge (117) wrapped up the scoring in the women's standings.

UCD's men remained in its first place perch with 378 points, while UC Santa Barbara moved into second place with 313 points following day two. Third place belonged to Cal Poly with 252 points, while Pacific (176) and Cal State Northridge (108) completed the men's standings.

Thursday's finals kicked off with a difficult race as the 500 free was in the spotlight. The women's race saw UC Davis' Bridget Bugbee won the event with an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:52.29. In the men's competition, Scott Vogelgesang of UC Santa Barbara claimed the title with an NCAA "B" cut time of his own in 4:25.74.

The 200 IM finals were the next event on the docket. Angie Haven of Cal Poly won the women's race with an NCAA "B" cut time of 2:00.71, while UC Davis' Scott Weltz claimed his first individual crown of the 2010 Championships with an NCAA "B" cut mark of 1:45.55.

An exciting sprint final was next as the competitors gathered for the 50 free. UC Santa Barbara's Anne Marie May claimed the title of Big West's fastest woman after winning the event in an NCAA "B" cut time of 22.35. Teammate Chris Peterson claimed the fastest man in the pool honor after winning the men's race in an NCAA "B" cut effort of 19.98.

Next the swimmers took a break from the competition lanes and the focus shifted on the diving platform for the men's 1-meter finals. UC Davis' Paul Navo led an Aggie sweep of the competition with his total of 282.80 points.

The day wrapped up with an exciting 400 medley relay race on both sides. UC Davis' women's squad posted an NCAA "B" cut time for the win, completing the event in 3:42.52. The men's race was a battle to the end between three clubs, but in the end UC Santa Barbara's quartet of swimmers outlasted Cal Poly and UC Davis in an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:14.74.
