UAA Championships: Day One

ATLANTA, Georgia, February 17. EMORY University senior diver Chelsea Murphy opened up the 2010 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships by earned all-conference honors in the women's one-meter dive during the first day of competition.

Murphy, Emory's lone diver competing in the event, finished third overall in the Wednesday night finals, scoring 361.50 points in the 11-dive event. In the preliminaries, Murphy notched a score of 371.45, also placing her third in the afternoon round.

Murphy's third-place finish earned the Eagles 27 points during the opening day.

The one-meter dive was won by University of Chicago freshman Rebecca Schmidt, who recorded a NCAA qualifying score of 419.10 in the finals. She was followed by New York University sophomore Kelly Dietz, who came in second with a qualifying score of 418.10. Dietz also notched the high score of the day, with a 419.20 during the preliminaries.

After one event, the University of Rochester took the lead in the women's championships with 98 points, followed by New York University with 67 points. The University of Chicago ended the day in third place (32 points), followed by Emory (27 points), Carnegie Mellon University (26 points) and Brandeis University (25 points). Case Western and Washington University did not compete during the one-meter dive.

Action at the UAA Championships, hosted by Emory University at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center in the Woodruff Physical Education Center, will continue on Thursday at 10:00 AM with the start of the swimming preliminaries.
