Southern California vs. UCLA

LOS ANGELES, California, February 11. SENIOR Katinka Hosszu, in her final dual meet, won three races to lead the No. 7 USC women's swimming and diving team to a 170-130 victory at UCLA on Saturday (Feb. 11), extending the Trojans' win-streak in the rivalry to five in a row.
USC improved to 6-2 overall, 5-2 in the Pac-12. UCLA fell to 4-5, 2-5. The Trojans now lead the series, 22-16. The Trojans also scored five points toward USC's total in the Crosstown Gauntlet, the year-long, all-sport battle between USC and UCLA. Troy now leads, 30-22.5.

The Trojans broke 10 pool records in the two-hour competition and five meet records.

The USC quartet of junior Yumi So, sophomore Kasey Carlson, Hosszu and junior Christel Simms opened the competition with a pool and meet record in the 200y medley relay, winning in 1:38.74, Troy's second-best time of the season.

Junior Haley Anderson dominated the 1650y free for the first of two wins. She opened a four-second lead after 700 yards, led by five seconds at the 800 and continued to extend the advantage throughout the rest of the race, winning in 16:16.90. UCLA's Lauren Baker was second (16:34.39) and Bruin Monica Dornick was third (16:42.32). Trojan sophomore Lynette Lim was fourth in 16:59.22.

USC senior Amanda Smith came back over the final 50 yards to win the 200y free in 1:47.00, a season-best 0.08 off the pool record as she edged Bruin Laurence Delisle (1:47.88). USC's next best finisher was sophomore Stina Gardell, fifth in 1:48.89.

So took the lead at the halfway point of the 100y back, but was edged at the wall two laps later as UCLA's Andrea Reigel out-touched her, winning 54.26 to 54.50. Bruin Emily Anderson was third (54.66) while Simms was fourth (55.27).

Carlson, who owns the top time in the country in the 100y breast, controlled the race from the start out of the first lane and won in 1:00.81, a pool record and just off the meet record by former Trojan Rebecca Soni (1:00.59). UCLA's Allison Gargalikis took second (1:02.52) while Bruin Emily Weir was third (1:03.19). Trojan junior Jessica Schmitt was fourth (1:03.72).

Bruin freshman Noelle Tarazona took it out fast in the 200y fly and led for the first six laps of the race. But Hosszu, the defending Pac-10 and NCAA champion in the race, came back over the final 50 yards to win in a pool-record 1:55.79 to Tarazona's 1:56.23. USC senior Tanya Krisman was third (1:57.56).

In the last event before the diving break, UCLA's Kathyrn Murphy out-touched Carlson at the wall of the 50y free, winning 22.45 to 22.50. Murphy's time was both a meet and pool record.

After the break, Carlson came back to win the 100y free in 49.00, a season-best effort good for meet and pool records. Carlson trailed Murphy at the halfway point but overtook her on the final lap. Murphy touched second in 49.10. Bruin Cynthia Fascella was third (49.70) while Simms was fourth (49.94).

Hosszu sprinted to an early lead in the 200y back and was not challenged, winning in a strong 1:55.13, good for a pool record and dropping her USC-best time by almost two seconds. UCLA's Anna Senko was second (1:58.66) and Reigel was third (1:59.28). Trojan junior Lolo Blair was fourth (1:59.32).

The Trojans dominated the 200y breast as Schmitt (2:10.06), Gardell (2:12.02, season-best) and junior Jordan Danny (2:12.31) finished 1-2-3. Schmitt's time broke the pool and meet records.

Anderson led another 1-2-3 finish in the 500y free, complementing her win in the mile with a victory in 4:45.56, a pool record. Smith took second (4:47.77) while Lim was third (4:50.02).

So, edged at the wall in the 100y back, won the 100y fly in 53.40 to set pool and meet records. Yasi Jahashahi was second for UCLA (53.77) while Bianca Casciari was third (53.99).

Hosszu completed her sweep today with a big win in the 400y IM (4:05.40), leading another strong event for the Trojans by breaking her meet and pool record. Sophomore Meghan Hawthorne took second (4:12.13) for the Trojans and teammate Schmitt claimed third (4:12.18).

In the final swimming event, UCLA won the 200y free relay in 1:30.43 for a meet and pool record. USC's quartet of Smith, Gardell and juniors Kate Shumway and Lindsay Parrish was second in 1:34.00.

Trojan senior Victoria Ishimatsu won both the 1-meter (327.00) and the 3-meter (339.30) diving (competed Friday).
