PCSC Championships: Day One

LONG BEACH, California, February 11. JUNIOR Tiffany Martz won the 3-meter springboard title with 240.60 points Wednesday during the first night of competition at the PCSC Championships, which are taking place at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

The Waves' 3-meter victory, combined with a pair of fourth-place showings in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays, has them sitting atop the conference leaderboard with 205 points. UC Santa Cruz is in second with 163 points and UC San Diego is third with 141 points.

Martz (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS), last year's conference champion on 1-meter, was one of three Pepperdine finalists. Freshman Jenna Tenwolde (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) finished as the runner-up with 237.05 points and sophomore Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) placed fifth with 198.05 points.

Pepperdine started the night posting a fourth-place and season-best time of 1:48.20 in the 200-yard medley relay, which was comprised of senior Ali Chester (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS), freshman Rachel Dekar (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School), junior Francesca Cyphers (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) and senior Dani Kimmel (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS).

Dekar's 50-yard breaststroke split was the fastest of the night at 28.76 seconds. Cyphers also registered an exceptional 50-yard butterfly split of 26.36.

In the 800 freestyle relay, the team of freshman Shannon Adkins (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), senior Brianna Blanchard (Agoura, Calif./La Reina HS), freshman Sarah Burris (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox HS) and sophomore Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) registered a fourth-place time of 7:47.51.

Competing from the second of three heats and with a seed time of 8:04.07, not only did the Waves surpass all the schools in their heat, but they were also faster than five of the eight teams swimming in the top flight.

Adkins led off the relay with a personal best 200 free time of 1:55, and Krall's anchor split was clocked at 1:54.

The PCSC Championships continue into Thursday with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 1-meter diving listed among the events.
