Army, Lafayette vs. Colgate

HAMILTON, New York, January 30. CAREN Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) each broke records as the Colgate women's swimming and diving squad wrapped up its regular season with victories over Army and Lafayette, Saturday at Lineberry Natatorium.

Colgate, which upped its record to 8-3, downed Army 206-73 and Lafayette 219.5-56.5 on Senior Day. The Raiders return to action February 18-20 as they attempt to defend their Patriot League title in Annapolis, Md.

Colgate captured 14 individual victories in the swimming events and one of two diving competitions.

Guyett shaved nearly .5 seconds off the pool record in the 500 free. The junior, who narrowly missed the same record last weekend, posted a winning time of 5:00.87, erasing the former standard set in 2001 of 5:01.43. Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.) and Erika Mortenson (Chesterfield, Mo.) placed second and third respectively as one of seven one-two-three sweeps by the Raiders.

Pilka won the three-meter diving competition with a final score of 280.55, which broke the former freshman record set in 1997 of 276.82. That score qualified the freshman for Zones, which will be held at Rutgers.

The other clean sweeps by Colgate came in the 100 breast, 200 fly, 100 free, 200 breast, 500 free, and 400 IM. Emma Santoro (Fall River, Mass.) claimed the 100 breast (1:06.99) ahead of Maggie White (Baltimore, Md.) and Caitie Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.); Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) won the 200 fly (2:05.85) ahead of teammates Guyett and Derlath and then followed by copping the 100 free (52.39) with Santoro and Sarah Button (Mendham, N.J.) finishing second and third respectively. Curran (2:26.76) and Guyett (4:28.86) led the top three sweeps in the 200 breast and 400 IM.

The Raiders finished with the top two spots in a pair of events. Santoro (1:54.80) and Kim Siembieda (Narbeth, Pa.) placed first and second in the 200 free, while Colgate took the top two spots in the 200 free relay. The team of Siembieda, Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.), McGraw and Guyett won the race with a time of 1:38.01.

Other firsts for Colgate came from Emily Kelly (Potomac, Md.) in the 1650 free (17:54.89), Button in the 100 back (1:00.05), Siembieda in the 200 back (2:09.36) and McGraw in the 100 fly (56.81). Colgate captured the opening event, the 200 medley relay as Kunnapas, Santoro, Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and Siembieda touched in first. The times for that event were unofficial due to a malfunction with the timing system.

On the men's side, Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) broke one of the oldest records in the books at Colgate as the Raiders completed their regular-season with a split of Lafayette and Army, in men's swimming action Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.

Colgate downed Lafayette 157-106, but fell to Army 195-77. The Raiders return to action February 18-20 at the 2010 Patriot League Championships in Annapolis, Md.

Swimming exhibition in lane eight of the 100 fly, Sweeney posted a 51.39 to lower the former freshman record of 51.40 set by Kevin Rusch back in 1982. Sweeney also copped one of three individual wins on the day by the Raiders. The freshman ripped off a 21.34 to win the 50 free.

The other two individual victories came from Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.). Gniewek won the 100 free after touching with a 47.58, while Healy claimed the 400 IM by .02 seconds. The junior posted a winning time of 4:11.93.

The 200 free relay team of Sweeney, Gniewek, Patrick White (Stamford, Conn.) and Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) registered a 1:25.82 in the final event to receive first place points.

Colgate received a second place effort from Hadjipateras in the 200 fly (1:54.65) and the foursome of Gniewek, Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.), Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.) and Sweeney was clocked with a 1:37.31 en route to a second-place performance.
