Iowa State vs. Nebraska

LINCOLN, Nebraska, January 30. THE Nebraska swimming and diving team won 10 of 16 events en route to a 177-123 victory over Iowa State on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Devaney Natatorium. The Huskers earned their first Big 12 win of the season, and improved to 4-2 overall on the year in dual meets.

The Huskers honored seven seniors before the meet, as Kaitlin Arntz, Colleen Criss, Karen Criss, Hailey Dean, Mariah Hutchinson, Kelsey Ida and Sarah Ziegelmann all participated in their final home meet as Huskers.

Iowa State raced to a quick start, winning the first two events of the day. The Huskers responded with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with Mariah Hutchinson winning the event with a time of 1:51.97. Ellan Dufour made it two straight wins for the Huskers with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in the next event. Nebraska took a 74-57 lead into the first diving break.

ISU's Abby Christensen took first on the three meter dive with a score of 283.88, narrowing the Husker lead. NU's Amy Herman took second with a score of 258.91.

Hutchinson earned her second win of the day in the first event after the diving break, the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 51.92, her best time of the season. Ariel Weech took third for the Huskers in the event. Iowa State battled back with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard backstroke and again closed the margin between the teams.

The Huskers once again responded with a 1-2 finish of their own in the 200-yard breaststroke, as Kaitlin Arntz and Kelsey Larson took first and second, respectively, in the event. Arntz won it with a time of 2:20.81. NU's Brandie Kavalec took first in the next event, the 500-yard freestyle, to stretch NU's lead even further. Iowa State took first in the 100-yard butterfly, but Nebraska still led 138-107 going into the second diving break.

Nebraska's D'Arcy Schmidt won the one meter dive with a score of 259.65, beating out ISU's Abby Christensen who scored 253.28. The Huskers also won the 400-yard IM as Kavalec took her second event win of the day. The Huskers closed out the victory with a first-place finish in the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 3:28.71.

The Huskers have one final dual this season, as it travels to Missouri next weekend to take on the Tigers. Nebraska then has three weeks off before traveling to College Station, Texas, for the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 24-27.
