Wyoming vs. Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, January 21. THE Wyoming Swimming and Diving teams split with the University of Utah, on Friday in Salt Lake City.

The Cowboys defeated the Utes, 179-121, improving their season record to 3-2 and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference. With the loss the Utes record drops to 4-5 and 0-2 in the MWC. On the women's side the Utes handed the Cowgirls their first defeat of the season, 160-140, dropping the UW record to 7-1 and 2-1 in the MWC. The victory brings the Utes record to 7-5 and 2-2 in the MWC on the season.

"The men I thought dominated tonight," Wyoming head swimming coach Tom Johnson said. "We had some excellent performances in our relays this evening."

The Cowboys 200 medley relay team consisting of Marshall Dilworth, Nate Ladner, Tyler Kybartas and Jeff Frey opened the men's side with a victory, and the 'Pokes continued on to win 12 of the 16 events.

Coach Johnson was very pleased with the performances of Kybartas, Jayce Calhoon and Nathan Fuller. Kybartas was the Cowboys only multiple event winner of the day winning both the 200 butterfly (1:53.56), and the 500 freestyle (4:39.50). Calhoon picked up a victory for UW in the 200 backstroke (1:52.16), while Fuller (1:56.69) touched out Calhoon (1:58.13) and Brandon Fischer (1:58.24) in the 200 individual medley. Other Cowboys picking up victories include; Fischer in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.62), Ethan Griffel in the 200 free (1:41.40), Dilworth in the 100 back (51.24), Ladner in the 100 breast (57.06), and Jeff Frey in the 50 free (20.86).

On the women's side the Cowgirls were only able to pick up six total event wins and lost in both the relays which Coach Johnson was very surprised by.

"Losing both relays like that was a backbreaker for us tonight," Johnson added. "The (women) have nothing to be ashamed of. We swam a lot of personal and season best times tonight."

The Cowgirls lost the 200 medley relay for the first time in a dual meet this season and were unable to recover from it. Lesley Young was the only Cowgirl to pick up multiple wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.73), and the 200 breast (2:19.15). Other Cowgirls picking up wins were, Paige Fischer in the 1000 freestyle (10:38.83), Kelsey Conci in the 100 backstroke (55.45), and Caroline Wells in the 200 back (2:06.25).

"Lesley was a star today," Johnson added. "Kelsey also swam very well to win the 100 back and was just touched out in the 50 free."

In today's diving session Cowboys Mark Murdock and Kyle Bogner split the 1-and 3-meter springboards. Murdock picked up the victory on the 1-meter with a mark of 342.90, with Bogner (339.45) and Derek Campbell (267.75) right behind him in second and third. Bogner picked up the victory on the 3-meter with a score of 371.02, with Murdock (324.45) placed third and Campbell (250.95) placed sixth.

On the women's side of diving, Allie Smith (297.45) placed first on the 3-meter springboard, with Carolyn Wallace (249.98) and Amanda Fay (220.05) placing fourth and fifth. On the 1-meter board Smith was unable to continue due to injury, but Wallace (242.48), Sasha Andrie (224.70), and Fay (211.35) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

"Now we need to focus on getting better because tomorrow against the Cougars is a big day for us," Johnson added.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will continue their Utah road trip in Provo, Tomorrow, Jan. 22 against the BYU Cougars beginning at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
