UMBC vs. Drexel, Howard

BALTIMORE, Maryland, January 9. THE 200 freestyle relay team of junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson), senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) broke the UMBC Natatorium pool record in 1:24.93 as the UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Drexel and Howard Saturday.

The women (3-3) defeated Howard 124-87 and Drexel 150-123, while the men (5-1) took down the Bison, 108-79 and the Dragons (161-130). The Retrievers won 23 out of the 32 events.

Jones also added two individual wins in the 50 free (21.55) and the 100 free (47.96), while sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) swept the backstroke events, taking the 100 in 52.63 and the 200 in 1:55.31. Juniors Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) and Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) won the 1,000 free and the 200 fly, respectively, and sophomore Andrew Reid (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) and freshman Alex Moothart (Hopkinton, Mass/Hopkinton) claimed golds in the 200 and 500 free, respectively.

On the women's side, senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) continued her outstanding senior year, winning all four events she competed in, including the 50 and 500 free, the 200 free relay and the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) won the 100 and 200 free events in 53.02 and 1:57.05, respectively, while senior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) swept the breaststroke events.

Junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) won the 1,000 free and senior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) won the 100 fly, while sophomore Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) claimed the 200 back. A pair of freshmen, Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) and Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md/Academy of Holy Cross) earned golds in the 200 fly and the 200 IM, respectively.

The Retrievers return to action as a full squad on Jan. 24 at Marist, while the women will compete in the College Swimming Carnival on the campus of Rutgers University on Jan. 22-23.
