Bucknell Invite: Day Two

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, November 19. BISON freshmen Lauren Perry, Stephanie Koziol and Emily Norton combined for three new program top-10 times and were Bucknell's top finishers in three of the five individual events contested Saturday at Kinney Natatorium on the second day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison remained in first place in the team standings of the three-day meet with 823 points, 50.5 ahead of second-place Fordham.

Perry posted the top finish on the day for the Bison, touching the wall second in the 200-yard freestyle. She timed in at 1 minute, 54.11 seconds, but her prelim time of 1:54.07 placed her ninth in the school record books in the event. She shaved .32 off her previous best that had listed her 10th. Perry also swam as part of the 800 free relay that placed eighth and the 200 medley relay that finished seventh.

Koziol moved from eighth to fifth on Bucknell's all-time 400 IM list as she finished fourth in 4:28.29 on Saturday. She cut 1.15 seconds off her previous season best. Sophomore Melissa Besman was also in the 400 IM "A" final, placing sixth, just two spots behind Koziol.

Norton also etched her name into the record book with the fifth-best performance in program history in the 100 breast. She finished fourth in her race with a time of 1:06.13 as she was one of five Bison to score points in the event. Sophomore Alyssa Rollando finished first in the "C" final with a time of 1:07.72, more than two seconds better than her prelim time. That 1:07.72 puts her 11th on the school's all-time list in the 100 breast.

Senior Kaitlyn Sweeney was Bucknell's top finisher in the 100 fly, placing seventh, while sophomore Jennifer Brennan led the way in the 100 back with a fourth-place showing.

Overall, 23 Bison scored in the five individual events contested Saturday and 19 were freshmen or sophomores.

The Bucknell Invitational will conclude on Sunday. The prelims begin at 10 a.m. and the finals are slated for 5 p.m.

Thomas Brown (100 backstroke), Mike Nicholson (400 IM) and Matthew Segar (200 free) posted victories and five new program top-10 marks were set as the Bison men's swimming and diving team remained in first place in the team standings after Saturday's second day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison have accumulated 1,149.5 points, nearly 400 more than second-place La Salle's 792.

Bucknell dominated the day as it earned victories in three of the five individual swimming events as well as the 800 free relay. The Bison had 15 (out of a possible 40) "A" final participants in the five individual swimming events. Only La Salle (8) had even half that number.

Nicholson posted perhaps the most impressive individual performance as he won the 400 IM with an NCAA "B" time of 3:53.73, nearly 11 seconds faster than the runner-up, teammate Billy Krause. Overall, Bucknell took three of the top four spots, and four of the top seven, in the event as rookies Eric Heinemann (4th) and George Beatty (7th) had strong races. Heinemann's time of 4:05.49 places him ninth on the program's all-time list.

Brown won the 100 back in 51.03 as he was one of three Bison to finish in the top six in the event. He was joined by Gonzalo DeLeon (5th) and Taylor Harris (6th).

Segar, who was just .19 seconds shy of the school record he set at last February's ECAC Championships, was the lone Bucknell swimmer in the top 10 of the 200 free, but he still won the race by more than 3.5 seconds over Georgetown's Paul Quincy.

Bucknell was strong in the 100 breast with Christian Treat (2nd), Ben Seketa (3rd) and Nathaniel Frye (5th) holding down three of the top five spots. Seketa's time of 57.71 ranks ninth in school history, .48 faster than his previous best that had been listed 10th.

Eric Sokolosky was one of four Bison in the "A" final in the 100 fly and he placed third. He was followed by Brown, Bryce Suchomel and Harris in sixth-seventh-eighth.

The Bison had strong relay teams as well as the 800 free relay of veterans Sokolosky, Segar, Treat and Brown finished third and clocked a 6:43.68, good for third in program history. Brown, Treat and Sokolosky also teamed up with Suchomel on the 200 medley relay team and placed second in a time of 1:32.99, the ninth-fastest mark in school annals.

Bucknell's final top-10 mark on the day came in the three-meter diving competition by freshman Jon Jones. The rookie scored a 249.05 to rank fifth on the all-time list.
