Polish Short Course Championships: National Record Book Torched on Final Day

GORZOW WIELKOPOLSKI, Poland, November 29. ON the final day of swimming at the Polish Short Course Championships, the national record book took some serious hits.

Agata Korc became the first Polish woman under 24 seconds in the women's 50 free. She clocked a 23.98 to erase her record of 24.32 set during prelims, which downed her record of 24.52 set in 2007. She closed the distance to Marleen Veldhuis' world record of 23.25 set in 2008.

Radoslaw Kawecki lowered the Polish record in the men's 100 back with a time of 50.65. The effort eclipsed his previous record of 51.01 set two weeks ago. Marcin Tarczynski tied his national record of 53.47 in the men's 100 IM.

Marcin Babuchowski cleared the national record in the men's 50 fly with a 23.28 in prelims. That swim beat his old mark of 23.36 set earlier this week. He then clocked a 23.10 in semifinals before Adam Plutecki trumped him in finals with a 22.95 for the final standard.

Alicja Tchorz lowered her national record in the women's 200 back with a time of 2:07.29. That performance beat her 2:07.40 set two weeks ago.

Paulina Zachoszcz cleared the national age group record in the women's 100 breast with a 1:06.66, touching out Ewa Cecieszko's 1:06.77. She nearly downed the overall national record of 1:06.51 held by Beata Kaminska since 2005.

Mirela Olczak grabbed the women's 100 fly title in 59.03, while Karolina Szczepaniak won the women's 400 IM in 4:38.72 – a national age group record for 17 year olds. Slawomir Kuczko snatched the men's 200 breast crown in 2:07.13, while Katarzyna Wilk captured the women's 200 fly title in 1:56.68 for the 17-18 national age group mark. Pawel Werner topped the men's 200 fly in 1:46.94, a 16-18 record.
