Canada Cup: Ryan Cochrane Sets Meet Record in 800 Free

TORONTO, Canada, November 27. THE first night of short course meter swimming at the Canada Cup produced a meet record in distance freestyle swimming.

Ryan Cochrane cleared the meet record with a 7:49.48 in the men's 800 free. He beat the 2007 mark of 7:52.91 previously set by Francesco Zuccaro. Trent Grimsey (8:04.47) and Richard Weinberger (8:05.35) wound up second and third. Bridget Coley cruised in the women's 1500 free with a winning time of 16:38.48, while Savannah King (16:50.21) and Karyn Jewell (16:53.88) completed the top three.

Genevieve Cantin topped the women's 200 back in 2:08.16, while Paige Schultz (2:09.65) and Dominik Bouchard (2:09.93) placed second and third. Matt Hawes easily won the men's 200 back in 1:54.82, while Matthew Swanston finished second in 1:57.45. Brian Johns took third in 1:58.37.

Annamay Pierse captured the women's 100 breast in 1:06.68 with Ashley McGregor taking second in 1:07.52. Bronwyn Pasloski rounded out the top three in 1:08.18. Paul Kornfeld overtook Warren Barnes, 1:00.38 to 1:00.94, in the men's 100 breast. Sean Nugent earned third in 1:01.03.

Julia Wilkinson snatched the women's 100 free in 54.19, while Victoria Poon touched second in 54.50. Erica Morningstar placed third in 54.85. Blake Worsley cleared 50 seconds in 49.95. David Hibberd turned in a second-place 50.07, while Kyle Troskot wound up third in 50.11.

Alex Komarnycky rolled to victory in the women's 400 IM with a 4:38.29. Tanya Hunks finished second in 4:39.94, while Cantin picked up her second medal of the night with a third-place 4:44.62. Andrew Tran pocketed the men's 400 IM in 4:18.62 with Mack Darragh (4:22.63) and Jeremie Holdom (4:24.95) garnering second and third.

Paige Miller snagged the sprint fly among the women with a 27.18, while Poon touched second in 27.24. Katerine Savard claimed third in 27.25 in the 50-meter event. Joe Bartoch touched out Nate Campbell, 24.55 to 24.64, in the men's 50 fly. Karim Zayed took third in 25.07.

Lauren Earp, Jacqueline Keire, Amanda Reason and Brittany MacLean topped the women's 400 free relay in 3:42.49. Kelly Aspinall, Rory Biskupski, Tommy Gossland and Brian Johns touched first in the men's 400 free relay with a 3:21.45.
