Minnesota Signs Sandy Whitaker To National Letter of Intent

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, November 24. UNIVERSITY of Minnesota men's swimming and diving head coach Dennis Dale announced today that Sandy Whitaker (Columbus, Ohio) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Minnesota.

A senior at St. Charles Preparatory School, Whitaker was a three-time Ohio State High School champion in 2009, winning the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly as a junior. He also contributed to the state title 200 medley relay team. A U.S. Junior Nationals qualifier, Whitaker also competes for the Greater Columbus Swim Team.

"Sandy used to live in Minnesota and he still has family in the Stillwater area," assistant coach Bill Tramel said. "Dennis and I met with Sandy in early July and were impressed with him as a person in addition to his swimming talents. He clearly completes and excellent early decision class for Minnesota."

His top times are 48.88 in the 100 butterfly, 50.36 in the 100 backstroke, 21.13 in the 50 free and 46.18 in the 100 free (short course yards).

Whitaker is the fourth member of the 2009-10 Gopher Swimming signing class, joining Drew Johnson (Chaska, Minn.), Brian Dailey-Arndt (St. Paul, Minn.) and Kyler Van Swol (Frankfort, Ill).
