Minnesota Announces Two More Signings

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, November 19. UNIVERSITY of Minnesota co-head swim coaches Kelly Kremer and Terry Nieszner have announced that Jenna Howenstein (Belleville, Ill.) and Amelia Marsh (Haslett, Mich.) have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Gopher swim program next fall. The two join swimmers and Minnesota natives Kaela Anderson, Tess Behrens, Erin Caflisch, Monica Radecke and Hailey Szews to the 2010-11 Gopher recruiting class.

Jenna Howenstein attends Cor Jesu Academy in St. Louis, Mo. and swims for Parkway Swim Club under coach Nick Rudich. Howenstein has been a Junior National level swimmer in the 100 and 200 butterfly and a Sectional qualifier in several events. She has been in the final at Speedo Champions Series in numerous relay events with Parkway. An honor student, Howenstein plans to major in pre-med at Minnesota. Howenstein is the third Parkway Swim Club women's swimmer to attend Minnesota. She is the daughter of Larry and Linda Howenstein.

"Jenna is the type of student athlete every college program hopes to attract, and we are really excited she felt Minnesota was the best fit for her after completing this process," Kremer and Nieszner said. "She continues a long line of Parkway swimmers that have chosen to call the University of Minnesota home. While Jenna may be considered a diamond in the rough, we believe she will step in immediately and help us in the butterfly events, and we will continue to further develop her versatility in her other strokes as well."

Amelia Marsh attends Okemos High School and competes with her team as well as the Spartan Swim Club. A NISCA All-American in the 200 and 500 free, Marsh was also a four-year all-state, all-area and all-conference selection for four years. In 2008, Marsh was the state champion in the 200 and 500 free and the state record holder in the 500 free. She helped Okemos to a four conference championships. A four-year letter winner in swimming, Marsh also lettered in water polo and is a member of the National Honor Society. A two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, Marsh has also competed at the Junior Nationals and the Speedo Series. She is the daughter of Terry and Pamela Marsh.

"Amelia's improvement curve is going exactly the way any swimmer would want it to, and we are so excited she has chosen to continue her career here with us," Kremer and Nieszner said. "She is a very humble and grounded young lady, but she is a tough competitor. Amelia will contribute immediately to our sprint and middle distance freestyle events, and should contend for a spot on a number of our relay teams next season as well."
