Ohio vs. Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio, November 13. OHIO Swimming and Diving traveled to central Ohio for its first non-conference dual meet of the season, defeating the Kenyon College Ladies by a final score of 175-110. The 'Cats won an impressive 11 of 16 events on the day, turning in a solid performance on the road.

Ohio got off to a very fast start and never looked back, winning the first five events. The Bobcats took first and second in the 200 Medley Relay, with the team of Sarah Owen (Portsmouth, England), Allison Schaefer (Medina, Oh.), Rachel Heim (San Diego, Ca.) and Chelsey Bower (Bethel Park, Pa.) touching in a speedy 1:46.77. Not far behind them were Katie Power (Ottawa, Ontario), Elizabeth Bishop (Hales Corners, Wisc.), Ashley Poitinger (Akron, Oh.) and Abby Corcoran (Tucson, Az.) finishing with a time of 1:51.44.

The Green and White absolutely dominated the 1000 Freestyle, taking the top three places in the event. Stacey Huber (Gainesville, Fla.) beat her season-best time by four seconds, touching in 10:25.67. Just a few seconds behind her was junior Stella Johnson (Jacksonville, Fla.) who also beat her season-best time by over four seconds, swimming a 10:34.42. Next was Amanda Traylor (Los Alamitos, Ca.) who gained a few more important points for Ohio with her third-place finish in 10:41.63.

"I was very pleased with what I saw today," said head coach Greg Werner. "We really improved from last weekend." Heim won the 200 Free for Ohio, with Kenyon's Anna Connolly nipping at her heels, touching just .16 seconds later. Kenyon gained a few points back in this event, as they took places 2-5 to cut into the Bobcats' lead. Owen comfortably won the 100 Backstroke to give the 'Cats some more breathing room, touching with a season-best 58.47.

Power and Annika Games (Brea, Ca.) finished next for Ohio, grabbing spots three and four in the event. Schaefer swam a season-best en route to taking first place in the 100 Breaststroke, earning first in the event by almost a full second. Kristen Witham (Fort Wayne, In.) swam a season-best 2:11.26 en route to placing second in the 200 Butterfly. Ohio really dealt a blow to Kenyon's chances when it took 1st-3rd in the 50 Free, as Bower, Anne Donovan (Findlay, Oh.), and Corcoran earned the top three spots, respectively.

"We were the aggressors today," said Werner. "On the swimming side our splits were very good and so was the execution of our turns."

The 1-meter diving board belonged to the 'Cats as well, as Ohio took the first three spots. Lindsay Hamilton (White City, Saskatchewan) took first with her 259.95. Freshman MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.) finished second with her 227.85 and Amy Bromberg (Deerfield, Ill.) set a season-high with her 220.50 score.

Of the remaining solo swimming events, Bower won the 100 Free, Owen took first in the 200 Backstroke with a season-best 2:05.10, Bishop swam a season-best 2:26.30 to finish second in the 200 Breaststroke, Huber swam a season-best 5:07.73 to win the 500 Free and Heim continued her excellent season by winning yet again, this time in the 100 Butterfly. When all was said and done, the Bobcats left Kenyon College with a solid 175-110 victory, improving their record to 3-2, 2-2 MAC.
