Mesa State vs. Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, October 30. POSTING the top marks in 28 of 32 overall events, the Air Force men's and women's swimming teams each picked up a dual victory over the visiting Mavericks Friday evening at Cadet Natatorium. The Falcon men (1-1) defeated the Mavs, 162-95, while the Air Force women (2-4) registered a 157-128 victory.

Air Force won each of 16 events against the Mesa State men's team, whose program is in its first year. The Falcons started with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Benjamin Gunn (Jr., Gainesville, Ga.), Josh Hammervold (Jr., Sugar Land, Texas), Chris Morin (Sr., Crown Point, Ind.) and Robert Dawson (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) clocked a time of 1:35.46 in the event. Meanwhile, Air Force's all-junior team of Gunn, Dawson, Eric Robinson (Lakewood, Colo.) and Hammervold closed out the evening with a win in the 400 free relay, coming in with a mark of 3:17.67.

With the Falcons scoring just one swimmer in each of the men's events, senior Sean O'Keefe (Lake Oswego, Ore.), Hammervold and Dawson led the team in individual points scored on the evening. O'Keefe captured first place in both the 100 free and 1000 free, posting times of 48.12 and 10:01.80, respectively. Hammervold took first in the 100 backstroke (56.43) and 200 breaststroke (2:12.38), while Dawson won the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.43, while scoring first-place points in the 100 butterfly.

Gunn won the men's 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:45.55, while also registering the top time in the 100 fly, posting a time of 50.65 in an exhibitioned event.

In the 100 breast, sophomore Cody Deacon (Portland, Ore.) won the event with a time of 59.66, while J.H. Vivadelli (Fr., Richmond, Va.) took first in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:58.45. Freshman Paul Young (Lakeville, Minn.) won the 200 back with a time of 2:01.15, while Corydon Butler (So., Williamsburg, Va.) captured first place in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:51.16. Rounding out Air Force's top performers was Robinson, who took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.83.

On the men's 1-meter diving board, sophomore Jesse Bicknell (Westtown, N.Y.) captured first place with a score of 308.33, followed by seniors Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.) and David Arlington (Eagle River, Alaska) in second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, Arlington won the 3-meter diving event with a mark of 332.63, followed by Van Valkenburg in second place and Bicknell in third place.

On the women's side, the Falcons registered the best marks in 12 of 16 events. Air Force posted the top marks in both of the relay events, with the team of Kaeli Kluesner (Jr., Denver, Colo.), Katrina Castellanos (Fr., Roseville, Calif.), Katharine Ernst (So., Folsom, Calif.) and Alison Ceranski (So., Marinette, Wis.) taking first place in the 200 medley relay with a mark of 1:52.08. Meanwhile, the team of Ceranski, Shelby Schaefer (Fr., Roseville, Calif.), Esther Kim (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Lauren Delaney (So., Panama Beach, Fla.) registered the top time in the 400 free relay, clocking in at 3:40.28.

Sophomore Cassie Fletcher (Durham, N.C.) led the women with a pair of first-place finishes, winning both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events. Fletcher clocked a time of 24.30 in the 50 free, while finishing the 100 free in a time of 54.72.

Freshmen Haley Holcombe (Snellville, Ga.) and Rachel Roberts (Eagle River, Alaska) won the 500 and 1000 freestyle events, respectively. Holcombe finished her race in a time of 5:24.90, while Roberts placed first in the 1000 free with a mark of 11:19.66.

Rosie Mayou (Fr., Derby, Kan.) took first place in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:11.26, while Castellanos won the 200 breast with a time of 2:30.88. The Falcons also won both butterfly events, with Elvira Chiccarelli (So., Panama City Beach, Fla.) posting a mark of 1:01.40 in the 100 fly to take first place, while Ernst finished with a time of 2:13.27 to win the 200 butterfly.

Kluesner added a top finish in the 200 backstroke, winning with a time of 2:14.28, while senior diver Chelsea Tompkins (Grand Junction, Colo.) took first place on the 3-meter board, recording a score of 226.58.

The Falcon swimmers are off next weekend, while the divers head to Los Angeles, Calif., to take part in the USC Diving Invitational, Nov. 6-7.
