Miami-Ohio vs. Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, October 30. THE Purdue men's swimming and diving team defeated Miami University 200-95 Friday evening inside the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

"We got done what we wanted to get done," head coach Dan Ross said. "We've seen the freshmen perform and figured out a couple of things we can do for next week. We obviously are going to need to swim significantly faster and dive better next week, but for this time of year, I'm very pleased. We are swimming a lot better than we were at this point last year. We have some freshmen I think we are going to be able to count on. It was nice to see Jimmy Page finally get some exposure after redshirting last year. I would give us a B-plus. I thought we did a pretty darn good job and raced pretty well in a fairly non-emotional meet. I have a lot of respect for the Miami team, and now our guys can get ready for Notre Dame to come to town."

Purdue put the meet away early by claiming the first six events in the pool. Kyle House, Scott Dean, Jimmy Brooks and Brendan Joyce won the 400-yard medley relay in 3 minutes, 27.85 seconds. The next three victories all came courtesy of freshmen. Alec LaMothe took the 1,000 freestyle in 9:34.96 and Corey Bandura outraced the 200 freestyle field in 1:42.97 to earn their first collegiate victories. Fellow freshman Chuck Destro won the 100 backstroke for the second consecutive meet, touching the wall in 1:42.97. Sophomore Albert Miller continued the winning by taking first in the 100 breaststroke with his 58.74 clocking, and freshman Vinny Donnelly claimed the 200 butterfly in 1:54.45.

The Boilermakers also swept both diving events for the second time in as many meets this season. Freshman Jimmy Page earned his first collegiate victory and moved to 10th on Purdue's all-time performance list when he scored 337.73 points off the 3-meter. Junior David Colturi took top honors in the 1-meter to improve to 2-0 off that board this season. Classmate Danny Cox took third from the lowest springboard in his first competition this season, and Page finished fourth.

Purdue got back on the winning track when sophomore Ben Wachtel won his second straight 100 freestyle race with a 45.83 time. Freshman Andrew Starr then won his first collegiate race when he beat the 200 backstroke field to the wall in 1:53.61. Sophomore Wyatt Hodges took top honors in the 200 breaststroke with his 2:09.28 time.

Senior Gage Barry won the most exciting race of the evening as he outtouched freshman Ray Mahon in the 500 freestyle. Barry stopped the clock in 4:41.30 and Mahon touched in 4:41.36. Sophomore Zach Johnson won the 100 butterfly in 51.61, and junior Scott Dean wrapped up the victories with his 1:56.83 clocking in the 200 IM.

The Boilermakers also took runner-up finishes in eight events. Adding to Mahon's second-place finish were fellow freshmen Sam Niesen in the 200 freestyle with his 1:45.94 time, Bandura in the 50 freestyle in 21.74 and Destro in the 100 freestyle with a 46.88 clocking. Juniors Matt Stewart and Mark Boman earned second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke races, respectively, in 52.93 and 1:54.89. Freshman Aaron Buchanan finished second in the 200 butterfly with his 1:54.88 time, and senior Andre Koop touched the wall in 2:11.18 for a runner-up placing in the 200 breaststroke.

Purdue now leads the all-time series 26-2 and has won the last 13 meetings. The Boilermakers return to the pool next Friday when they host Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m. ET.
