NCAA Div. I Women: North Carolina Cruises to ACC Title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA., Feb. 17. HOPING to emulate its men's basketball team, which is top-ranked nationally and favored to win this year's Atlantic
Coast Conference Championship, the UNC Lady Tar Heels showed their collective "heels" to the rest of the conference here this weekend by sweeping to their second consecutive ACC championship. It was Coach Frank Comfort's 14th title in the 23-year history of the meet.

Comfort coaches the Tar Heel men too and will be looking for a sweep this coming weekend, with that meet also in Charlottesville.

Carolina scored a whopping 823 points, sweeping past Virginia's 639.50 and third-place finisher Clemson (523.50).

The only Tar Heel to win an event here Saturday was freshman breaststroker Becky Acker, who splashed to a pr and pool record 2:14.21. Teammate Katie Hathaway was just behind in 2:14.54. Ironically Acker is a
native of nearby Richmond, but preferred Tar Heel blue to Cavalier orange and navy!

Perhaps the most impressive performance of the evening was the double turned in by Virginia sophmore Cara Lane, who won the 1650 free in an ACC- and school-record 15:58.46 (NCAA automatic cut); then came back less than an hour later to win the 200 fly in a pr 1:59.03 — another automatic cut. Teammate Mirjana Boseveka, who won the 400 IM Friday night, was runner-up in a pr and NCAA automatic cut 1:59.10.

Boseveka is a Macedonian Olympian and was runner-up opening night in the 200 IM, won by Carolina's Erika Acuff in a pr 1:59.88.

Maryland's Suzy Catterson, a transfer from Nevada-Reno, won the 100 free in a pr 49.82, making the NCAA consideration standard.

Virginia's Megan Iffland added the 200 back title tothe 100 victory she claimed Friday evening, winning in 1:58.64 to Carolina's Leigh Sanders' 2:01.09.
